Catalytic One-Handed Helix Induction and Subsequent Static Memory of Poly(biphenylylacetylene)s Assisted by a Small Amount of Carboxy Groups Introduced at the Pendants

Tomoyuki Ikai et al.

Summary: In this study, a dynamically racemic helical copolymer was discovered to fold into an excess one-handed helix in the presence of a small amount of optically active amines, and the induced helicity was retained after removal of the chiral amines. The copolymer showed high sensitivity for detecting the chirality of chiral amines, even in the presence of a very low amount, and exhibited Cotton effects.

Nickel-catalyzed polymerization of a substituted sulfoxonium ylide

Sherilyn J. Lu et al.

Summary: The homopolymerization of (dimethylamino)phenylsulfoxonium ethylide, a substituted sulfoxonium ylide, was reported to produce poly[(1-butene)-ran-(2-butene)-ran-(ethylene)] with good yield and high molecular weight using Ni(II) catalyst. Variation in the monomer-to-catalyst feed ratio allowed control over the molecular weights of the polymers produced. The polymerization mechanism involves chain growth with the addition of ethylide units to growing polymer chains and expulsion of (dimethylamino)phenyl sulfoxide as a byproduct.

Visualisation of helical structures of poly(diphenylacetylene)s bearing chiral amide pendants by atomic force microscopy

Ayhan Yurtsever et al.

Summary: The study visualized the helical structures of poly(diphenylacetylene)s bearing optically active substituents linked through amide bonds and with a helicity memory using atomic force microscopy. The polymers self-assembled into an ordered 2D monolayer on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite upon exposure to solvent vapor, with the helical pitch and handedness (right- and left-handed) directly revealed at molecular resolution for the first time.
