Pooling Sputum Samples for Efficient Mass Tuberculosis Screening in Prisons

Paulo Cesar Pereira dos Santos et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that using Xpert Ultra for screening pooled sputum samples is a sensitive strategy for tuberculosis screening. Pooled sputum testing is more efficient than individual testing across various tuberculosis prevalence settings and helps to contain costs in mass screening programs.

Digital Chest X-Ray with Computer-aided Detection for Tuberculosis Screening within Correctional Facilities

Kavindhran Velen et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the value of combining digital chest X-ray with symptom-based screening in improving the tuberculosis detection rate among inmates. The results show that adding digital chest X-ray can identify twice as many undiagnosed tuberculosis cases compared to symptom-based screening alone.

Yield, Efficiency, and Costs of Mass Screening Algorithms for Tuberculosis in Brazilian Prisons

Andrea da Silva Santos et al.

Summary: A study conducted in three prisons in Brazil found that testing all inmates with sputum Xpert MTB/RIF was a sensitive and cost-effective approach for tuberculosis screening, detecting the majority of TB cases.

Subclinical Tuberculosis Disease-A Review and Analysis of Prevalence Surveys to Inform Definitions, Burden, Associations, and Screening Methodology

Beatrice Frascella et al.

Summary: A substantial proportion of individuals with TB present subclinically, usually defined as bacteriologically-confirmed but negative on symptom screening. The median proportion of prevalent bacteriologically confirmed TB that is subclinical is 50.4%. Further research is needed to explore associations with overall burden and program indicators.

The escalating tuberculosis crisis in central and South American prisons

Katharine S. Walter et al.

Summary: In much of the world, tuberculosis incidence has declined over the past decade, but it has risen in central and South America due to the growing incarcerated population. The increase in tuberculosis cases among persons deprived of their liberty far outweighs the control gains in the general population, creating a health and human rights crisis that undermines wider tuberculosis control efforts. Urgent measures are needed to prioritize the health of this vulnerable population in order to control tuberculosis in the region.

Incidence and prevalence of tuberculosis in incarcerated populations: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Olivia Cords et al.

Summary: Prisons are high-risk environments for tuberculosis, with significant disparities in the incidence and prevalence of tuberculosis in incarcerated populations across regions. People in prison are at elevated risk of contracting Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection and developing tuberculosis compared to the general population.

Use of targeted mobile X-ray screening and computer-aided detection software to identify tuberculosis among high-risk groups in Romania: descriptive results of the E-DETECT TB active case-finding project

Beatrice Mahler et al.

Summary: The study implemented and evaluated a mobile X-ray unit equipped with digital radiography, computer-aided detection (CAD) software, and molecular point of care tests to improve early tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis in vulnerable populations in Romania. The results showed high TB prevalence rates among homeless persons, problem drug users, and the Roma population, indicating targeted active case finding could contribute significantly to TB control in the country.
