Summary: Physically effective NDF (peNDF) and undegraded aNDF at 240 h (uNDF.240) are important parameters that characterize fibre evaluation. A new concept of physically effective uNDF.240 (peuNDF.240) combines peNDF and uNDF.240, allowing the determination of dry matter intake (DMI) and productive response of cows. A study of 22 Holstein dairy farms showed that low uNDF.240 content in the diet was associated with higher milk yield and peuNDF.240 was negatively related to milk yield and gross feed efficiency, suggesting that the inclusion of low digestible forages may require fine shredding to increase cow production.
