Dynamic continuous hydrocarbon accumulation (DCHA): Existing theories and a new unified accumulation model

Tao Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanisms and models of dynamic continuous hydrocarbon accumulation (DCHA) and provides empirical evidence using a well-known case in the Bohai Bay Basin in eastern China. The results show that DCHA is a superimposed accumulation of multiple petroleum reservoir types with varying sources, charging times, forces, and modes.

Potential resources of conventional, tight, and shale oil and gas from Paleogene Wenchang Formation source rocks in the Huizhou Depression

Tao Hu et al.

Summary: Based on geological and geochemical analyses, this study establishes a hydrocarbon generation and expulsion model for the Wenchang Formation source rocks and evaluates the conventional, tight, and shale oil and gas resources in combination with the reservoir tightness history. The results show that the Wenchang Formation source rocks in the Huizhou Depression have a widespread distribution and contain abundant oil and gas resources.

A unified model for the formation and distribution of both conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs

Xiongqi Pang et al.

Summary: The discovery and exploration of unconventional oil/gas resources since the 1980s have been a significant advancement in petroleum geology, changing the global energy market and enhancing understanding of oil/gas reservoir formation. This paper focuses on studying the relationship between conventional and unconventional resources, analyzing formation conditions in different oil/gas reservoirs to establish a unified model that addresses their differences and correlations.

Key factors controlling the occurrence of shale oil and gas in the Eagle Ford Shale, the Gulf Coast Basin: Models for sweet spot identification

Lianhua Hou et al.

Summary: The study systematically examines the key geological parameters controlling the enrichment and productivity of shale oil and gas, including both source and derived parameters. The results indicate that derived parameters for shale are closely related to source parameters, influenced by thermal evolution and tectonic evolution.

Possible explanations for the predominance of tricyclic terpanes over pentacyclic terpanes in oils and rock extracts

Paul Philp et al.

Summary: Hopanes and tricyclic terpanes are typically the dominant terpanes in crude oils and source rock extracts, but in certain regions, tricyclic terpanes can be dominant with the virtual absence of hopanes, likely due to the higher maturity levels and source contributions.

Evaluation and re-understanding of the global natural gas hydrate resources

Xiong-Qi Pang et al.

Summary: Natural gas hydrate (NGH) has been considered as an alternative to conventional oil and gas resources for future energy supply. However, historical resource estimates show a downward trend and future projected resource value is only about 10% of total natural gas resource. With technical challenges, high cost, and lack of competitive advantages, it is unlikely that NGH will be the major energy source in the future.

Correlation and difference between conventional and unconventional reservoirs and their unified genetic classification

Xiongqi Pang et al.

Summary: The discovery and large-scale exploration of unconventional oil/gas resources have been seen as the most important advancement in petroleum geology history since the 1980s. This study reveals correlations and differences between conventional and unconventional oil and gas reservoirs, and proposes a unified genetic classification scheme to clarify their differences and correlations.

The mechanism of unconventional hydrocarbon formation: Hydrocarbon self-sealing and intermolecular forces

Jia Chengzao et al.

Summary: The successful development of unconventional hydrocarbons has led to a significant increase in global hydrocarbon resources and a breakthrough in classical oil and gas geology. The core mechanism of conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon accumulation differs, with unconventional resources being characterized by continuous accumulation and non-buoyancy accumulation. Understanding the formation mechanisms of unconventional hydrocarbons and the behavior of intermolecular forces can improve predictions, evaluations, and techniques for developing unconventional oil and gas resources.
