Significant improvement of dye-sensitized solar cell performance using low-band-gap chromophores based on triphenylamine and carbazole as donors

Mohamed R. Elmorsy et al.

Summary: A series of new metal-free D-D-pi-A dyes (TMS-1-4) based on triphenylamine (TPA) and carbazole (Cz) have been designed and used in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) as strong donor species. These dyes exhibit strong absorption ability, which shows promise in improving the performance of DSSCs.

Isomeric tetrazole-based organic dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells: Structure-property relationships

Luciano da Silva et al.

Summary: Two new organic dyes, SD-1 and SD-2, with donor-pi-acceptor architecture were synthesized and applied to dye-sensitized solar cells. The co-sensitization of SD-2 with ruthenium complex HD-2 showed higher efficiency compared to co-sensitization with DCA. The influences of molecular geometry on charge recombination and photovoltaic performance of DSSCs were systematically investigated.

Porphyrins containing a tetraphenylethylene-substituted phenothiazine donor for fabricating efficient dye sensitized solar cells with high photovoltages

Jiazhi Zou et al.

Summary: By introducing a dialkoxy-TPE moiety into the donor unit of a porphyrin dye, the photovoltages and efficiencies of dye sensitized solar cells were significantly enhanced. The optimization of substituents surrounding the porphyrin macrocycle played a crucial role in improving V-OC and efficiencies.

Recent progress in organic solar cells based on non-fullerene acceptors: materials to devices

Dou Luo et al.

Summary: Non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) have recently gained prominence in organic solar cells (OSCs) due to their significantly higher power conversion efficiency compared to fullerene acceptors. NFAs have advantages such as facile synthesis methods and tunability of morphology and electronic properties. They can also modify the optical bandgap to broaden the absorption range.

Push-Pull Phenoxazine-Based Sensitizers for p-Type DSSCs: Effect of Acceptor Units on Photovoltaic Performance

Kavya S. Keremane et al.

Summary: Finding efficient p-type sensitizers for NiO photocathodes is a challenge for developing low-cost tandem dye-sensitized solar cells. In this study, six new organic dyes were designed and synthesized for sensitizing mesoporous p-type semiconductor NiO in p-type DSSCs. Optical studies showed that these dyes exhibited suitable absorption and emission features, with thermodynamic parameters favoring charge transfer involving NiO. One of the dyes achieved the highest power conversion efficiency in the devices.

Expanding π-bridge and introducing auxiliary acceptor for realizing panchromatic absorption of the phenothiazine dyes in dye-sensitized solar cells

Chaoqiang Liao et al.

Summary: This study constructed four phenothiazine dyes and applied them to fabricate DSSCs. The results showed that introducing isoindigo can achieve panchromatic absorption of dyes, and thieno[3,2-b]thiophene is a better pi-bridge. However, the efficiency of isoindigo-based dyes is lower.

Luping Lyu et al.

Summary: This paper fabricated cosensitized DSSCs using quinoxaline-based co-sensitizers and a ruthenium dye, and comprehensively assessed the effect of molecular architecture on the photovoltaic performance of devices. The results showed that bulky rigid quinoxaline-based co-sensitizers played a key role in enhancing the overall efficiency of DSSCs.
