Active colloids in harmonic optical potentials

I. Buttinoni et al.

Summary: We study the motion of active Janus colloids in an optical trap using experiments, theory, and numerical simulations. Our results demonstrate a simple way to study active soft matter in optical potential landscapes eliminating the optical torque.

Time irreversibility in active matter, from micro to macro

J. O'Byrne et al.

Summary: This Review discusses the non-equilibrium features in active matter, including the violation of time-reversal symmetry and departure from Boltzmann statistics, as well as the time-reversible description of active systems and the non-equilibrium nature of microscopic energy sources. Methods from equilibrium statistical mechanics can guide the design of new active materials.
