Theoretical insight into surface structures of pentlandite toward hydrogen evolution

Linguo Lu et al.

Summary: Pentlandite ((Fe, Ni)(9)S-8) is a promising transition-metal catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction, but the long activation process and facet-dependent hydrogen evolution activity are not fully understood. Density functional theory calculations reveal that small metal cubes play a crucial role in surface stability and the linking sites between them act as the main catalytic active sites for hydrogen evolution.

Classifying and benchmarking high-entropy alloys and associated materials for electrocatalysis: A brief review of best practices

Matthew W. Glasscott

Summary: Given the diverse composition of high-entropy materials (HEMs) recently reported, it is necessary to use consistent material classification and benchmarking practices for comparison. This paper reviews an updated high-entropy definition and proposes a universal entropy metric applicable to high-entropy alloys and emerging HEMs. Additionally, analytical methods for physical classification and best practices for electrocatalytic benchmarking are discussed.

Boosting the overall electrochemical water splitting performance of pentlandites through non-metallic heteroatom incorporation

Mohamed Barakat Zakaria Hegazy et al.

Summary: In this study, the synthesis of heterotrimetallic pentlandite-type material Fe3Co3Ni3S8 (FCNS) in the presence of suitable phosphorus and nitrogen donors for electrochemical water splitting was reported. The preferential incorporation of N into the FCNS lattice was observed, while the addition of phosphorus led to metal-phosphate-FCNS composites. The doped FCNS materials showed improved performance in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) compared to the pristine FCNS.

Trimetallic Pentlandites (Fe,Co,Ni)9S8 for the Electrocatalytical HER in Acidic Media

Mathias Smialkowski et al.

Summary: Recently, pentlandite materials have been found to have promising properties for the hydrogen evolution reaction. By synthesizing a series of trimetallic FeCoNi-pentlandite materials and composites through high-temperature synthesis and categorizing them by purity, we have determined their electrocatalytic properties for the hydrogen evolution reaction. These properties were then correlated to hydrogen adsorption energies calculated using density functional theory (DFT), providing insights into the activity and origin of the pentlandite system and guiding meaningful approaches for catalyst synthesis.

Fe/Co and Ni/Co-pentlandite type electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction

Mathias Smialkowski et al.

Summary: Metal-rich transition metal sulfides have gained attention as electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction due to their ability to overcome challenges faced by sulfide-rich metal catalysts. This study demonstrates the synthesis, characterization, and electrocatalytic investigation of ternary metal-rich sulfide composites with pentlandite-type structures. Stoichiometric variation in these composites significantly influences their electrochemical activation/deactivation behavior, with Co-deficient composites showing improved performance in HER compared to Co9S8. Additionally, Ni/Co compounds generally exhibit higher catalytic activities towards HER than Fe/Co compounds.
