Shale Reservoir Heterogeneity: A Case Study of Organic-Rich Longmaxi Shale in Southern Sichuan, China

Hongming Zhan et al.

Summary: This study used micro-computed tomography, ion beam scanning electron microscopy, and small-angle neutron scattering to investigate the pore distribution of shale in the Longmaxi Formation in the Luzhou block of southern Sichuan. The results showed that shale micropores are dominated by microfractures along the bedding direction and contribute 1.24% of porosity. Shale nanopores are more developed, contributing 3.57-4.72% porosity, with local heterogeneity at the microscale but lateral homogeneity and vertical heterogeneity at the macroscale.

Key factors of marine shale conductivity in southern China-Part II: The influence of pore system and the development direction of shale gas saturation models

Linqi Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper studies the resistivity curve responses of marine shale gas reservoirs, emphasizing the direct impact of pore type on rock resistivity and exploring the relationship between reservoir classification methods and resistivity curves. It also points out that existing saturation models are insufficient for evaluating the saturation of shale gas reservoirs, and subsequent research should consider the characteristics of the rock.

Pore Structure Characteristics and Their Controlling Factors of Deep Shale: A Case Study of the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation in the Luzhou Area, Southern Sichuan Basin

Yanran Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the pore characteristics of deep shale in the LZ region of southern Sichuan using various methods. The results show that the pores can be classified into four categories and the total pore volume is dominated by mesopores. The factors that influence pore structure include buried depth, geochemical factors, and mineral composition.

Enrichment characteristics and exploration directions of deep shale gas of Ordovician-Silurian in the Sichuan Basin and its surrounding areas, China

Nie Haikuan et al.

Summary: The study found that the reservoir characteristics and enrichment conditions of deep shale gas are complex and diverse, requiring deeper geological understanding and the use of technology suitable for geological features. The LM1-LM3 marine-continental transition zone is the most favorable production interval, and deepwater areas are the main areas for deep shale gas enrichment.

Key factors of marine shale conductivity in southern China-Part I: The influence factors other than porosity

Linqi Zhu et al.

Summary: The research aims to clarify the main controlling factors of resistivity log responses in marine shale gas formations by conducting systematic pilot studies. Analyses on large core test datasets from the Longmaxi-Wufeng Formation and corresponding resistivity logging curves in 4 shale gas areas indicate that mineral composition, especially clay minerals and organic matter, are the main controlling factors of conductivity in low-porosity systems. Elemental logging can accurately reflect the resistivity of the reservoir and help develop future studies on the relationship between electrical conductivity and saturation of shale gas rocks.

Gas Adsorption Characterization of Pore Structure of Organic-rich Shale: Insights into Contribution of Organic Matter to Shale Pore Network

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that organic matter and organic matter-hosted pores play significant roles in the pore network of Wufeng-Longmaxi shale. The pore structure heterogeneity of the bulk shale is stronger than that of isolated organic matter, and pores associated with minerals enhance the heterogeneity to some extent. Organic matter and its hosted pores contribute significantly to the entire pore network of Wufeng-Longmaxi shale.

Formation, preservation and connectivity control of organic pores in shale

Tenger Borjigin et al.

Summary: Organic pore development is controlled by the type, maturity, and decomposition of organic matter, while the preservation of organic pores is influenced by maturity and diagenesis. The connectivity of pores depends on the abundance and distribution of organic matter. Different types of shale have varying characteristics in the formation and connection of organic pores, grain margin fractures, and bedding fractures.
