Landslide detection, monitoring and prediction with remote-sensing techniques

Nicola Casagli et al.

Summary: This article discusses the use of remote sensing technology in detecting, monitoring, and predicting landslides. It highlights the importance of these activities in managing landslide risks, especially when they occur near human settlements and infrastructure. Various remote sensing techniques, such as satellite observation and ground-based sensors, provide valuable information for landslide analysis and management.

Acceleration of a large deep-seated tropical landslide due to urbanization feedbacks

Antoine Dille et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the dynamics of a large landslide in the city of Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo, caused by 70 years of urbanization using satellite and aerial images. The research reveals a close relationship between changes in pore-water pressure and landslide motion. Over time, urbanization led to the acceleration of the landslide, likely due to self-reinforcing feedbacks involving slope movement, rerouting of surface water flows, and pipe ruptures.

Kinematic and Geometric Characterization of the Vogelsberg Rockslide (Tyrol, Austria) by Means of MT-InSAR Data

Filippo Vecchiotti et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the study of the Vogelsberg landslide in Austria, using the BFAST and VIM methods to characterize the landslide from the kinematic and geometrical point of view. The analysis of Sentinel-1 differential interferograms and MSBAS algorithms allowed the identification of the seasonality and trend of the landslide, which were correlated with triggering factors such as rain and snow melting. The VIM method reconstructed the depth of the landslide slip surface and evaluated the volumes of material mobilized. The results highlight the importance of in-depth analysis of MT-InSAR data for landslide characterization and hazard assessment.

Sentinel-1 and RADARSAT Constellation Mission InSAR Assessment of Slope Movements in the Southern Interior of British Columbia, Canada

Byung-Hun Choe et al.

Summary: Landslides are the most common natural hazard in British Columbia, and radar remote sensing has proven to be an effective method for detecting downslope movements. This study reveals significant earthflow movements in the Southern Interior of the province, and new data with higher spatial resolution demonstrate the advantages of monitoring small-scale slope movements.

SAR-derived flow velocity and its link to glacier surface elevation change and mass balance

Sergey Samsonov et al.

Summary: By combining SAR-derived velocity measurements with glacier elevation change and specific mass balance data, a technique has been developed to study glacier adaptation to warming climates. This technique reveals the seasonal variability in glacier flow velocities and can model the observed seasonal signal using the Positive Degree Day model.

Measuring the state and temporal evolution of glaciers in Alaska and Yukon using synthetic-aperture-radar-derived (SAR-derived) 3D time series of glacier surface flow

Sergey Samsonov et al.

Summary: Climate change has reduced global ice mass over the last 20 years, leading to accelerated surface melt and runoff rates. A new technique has been developed to map the evolution of glaciers in unprecedented detail, with observations of seasonal and interannual variations in flow velocities in southeastern Alaska. This technique can be utilized for reconstructing the response of glaciers worldwide to warming climate and for near-real-time monitoring using satellite data.
