Optimization of Ozonation Process to Remove Psychoactive Drugs from Two Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants

Deivisson L. Cunha et al.

Summary: The presence of pharmaceutical products in municipal wastewaters has become a major environmental concern. This study focuses on the application of ozonation to degrade benzodiazepine drugs in the effluents of two wastewater treatment plants in Rio de Janeiro. Through optimization of operating conditions, significant removal of these drugs was achieved, especially when using a larger effluent volume and appropriate ozone dose.

Polystyrene nanofibers as an effective sorbent for the adsorption of clonazepam: kinetic and thermodynamic studies

Jing An et al.

Summary: Polystyrene electrospun nanofibers were prepared and used for the adsorption of clonazepam from aqueous solution. The adsorption conditions were optimized and the kinetics and thermodynamic properties were studied. The results showed that PS electrospun nanofibers have good potential as an effective adsorbent material for the separation and purification of clonazepam from a water-soluble matrix.

Experimental and theoretical evaluation of the clonazepam adsorption onto carbon nanotubes

Masoumeh Ghalkhani et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the interaction between clonazepam and zigzag carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and demonstrated the adsorption ability of CNTs for clonazepam molecules. The experimental results showed that clonazepam molecules can effectively interact with CNTs and be adsorbed onto the surface of CNTs. The presence of CNTs facilitated the redox reaction of clonazepam, resulting in sharper voltammograms. The findings suggest that CNTs are suitable for the fabrication of sensitive sensors for trace analysis of clonazepam or effective adsorbents for its removal from contaminated specimens.

Silver nanoparticles @ titanate nanotubes composite: Synthesis, characterization, applications and docking

Ibraheem O. Ali et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the synthesis of silver nanoparticles in the inner walls of titanate nanotubes through two different approaches. The results show that exposing a suspension of silver nitrate and pre-synthesized nanotubes to UV irradiation, followed by drying and heating, successfully leads to the synthesis of silver nanoparticles on the inner walls of the nanotubes. One of the approaches also involves calcinating the nanotubes, resulting in a transformation from a layered structure to a three-dimensional structure. Additionally, the synthesized silver nanoparticles exhibit high inhibitory effects on cancer cells and demonstrate excellent photocatalytic activity.

Adsorptive removal of ciprofloxacin with different dissociated species onto titanate nanotubes

Haodong Ji et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption behavior and mechanism of ciprofloxacin (CIP) with different dissociated species by titanate nanotubes (TNTs) through experimental and theoretical calculations. The results showed that the protonation/deprotonation state of CIP affects the adsorption ability, and the electrostatic potential energy can serve as an indicator of adsorption ability for PPCPs molecules. TNTs have great potential for removing PPCPs through adsorption in practical wastewater treatment.

Drugs of abuse and their metabolites in river sediments: Analysis, occurrence in four Spanish river basins and environmental risk assessment

Ester Lopez-Garcia et al.

Summary: The environmental impact of drugs of abuse in sediments has been understudied, with a new method developed in this study to analyze 20 drugs of abuse and metabolites in sediments from Spanish river basins. The most common compounds found were cocaine, methadone, and EDDP, with cannabinoids, THC, and methadone being the most abundant. The presence of EDDP, THC, and methadone in sediments at 28 locations poses a risk to sediment-dwelling organisms.
