Using Satellite Observations to Evaluate Model Microphysical Representation of Arctic Mixed-Phase Clouds

J. Shaw et al.

Summary: This study highlights the importance of mixed-phase clouds in Arctic warming and the challenges of accurately representing them in climate models. By adjusting model microphysical variables to match cloud phase metrics, researchers were able to produce Arctic-constrained model runs and evaluate cloud feedbacks. The results suggest that mixed-phase processes play a key role in mediating the Arctic climate response to warming.

LGM Paleoclimate Constraints Inform Cloud Parameterizations and Equilibrium Climate Sensitivity in CESM2

Jiang Zhu et al.

Summary: This study examines the role of cloud parameterizations in simulating the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) cooling in the Community Earth System Model version 2 (CESM2). It attributes the excessive LGM cooling to the new CESM2 schemes of cloud microphysics and ice nucleation. By removing certain cloud ice number limiters and reducing the time-step size in cloud microphysics, the excessive cooling can be eliminated. Based on these findings, a paleoclimate-calibrated CESM2 (PaleoCalibr) has been developed, which simulates well the observed twentieth century warming and cloud-climate variables. PaleoCalibr demonstrates a lower climate sensitivity and weaker aerosol-cloud interaction compared to CESM2. This study underscores the importance of paleoclimate constraints in improving cloud parameterizations and climate projections.

Summary: The study incorporated the MG2 cloud microphysics and ice nucleation scheme into the AM4.0 model, showing favorable global simulation performance compared to AM4.0 with improvements in coastal marine stratocumulus, ice fraction realism, and dominant accretion over autoconversion. Sensitivity tests indicated significant impacts of nucleation and sedimentation schemes on cloud liquid and ice water fields, while higher horizontal resolution did not show significant improvement.
