Onset of many-body quantum chaos due to breaking integrability

Vir B. Bulchandani et al.

Summary: This research argues that finite-sized integrable quantum systems are robust against weak integrability-breaking perturbations, but can become quantum chaotic and thermalized if the perturbations are strong enough. The onset of quantum chaos is described as a Fock-space delocalization process, where the integrable system's eigenstates are considered as Fock states. The introduction of perturbations in the Fock space leads to hopping, and chaos occurs when this hopping delocalizes the many-body eigenstates. The range of dominant Fock-space hopping determines whether delocalization occurs through a crossover or sharp transition. The strength of perturbations at the onset of chaos scales to zero in the thermodynamic limit, with a size dependence estimated analytically and numerically computed for specific models.

Entanglement of midspectrum eigenstates of chaotic many-body systems: Reasons for deviation from random ensembles

Masudul Haque et al.

Summary: Eigenstates of local many-body interacting systems far from spectral edges are believed to be ergodic and close to randomness, aligning with the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis and entanglement volume-law scaling. However, systematic departures from complete randomness are typically present in mid-spectrum eigenstates, partly due to spatial correlations and orthogonality to eigenstates at the spectral edge, which introduce structure to these mid-spectrum states.

Quantum scarring in a spin-boson system: fundamental families of periodic orbits

Saul Pilatowsky-Cameo et al.

Summary: Periodic orbits are solutions for dynamical systems that repeat themselves, stable in regular regime and unstable in chaotic regime. Unstable periodic orbits are associated with quantum scarring, limiting the degree of delocalization of eigenstates and leading to revivals in dynamics. The effects of periodic orbits on eigenstate structure in regular and chaotic regimes are studied, along with quantifying the scarring of eigenstates and comparing dynamics of initial coherent states near and far from those orbits.

Chaos in the Bose-Hubbard model and random two-body Hamiltonians

Lukas Pausch et al.

Summary: The study reveals a relationship between the chaotic phase of the Bose-Hubbard model and the bosonic embedded random matrix ensemble, showing agreement and discrepancies in eigenstate description and fractal dimension distribution, which aid in discriminating among different many-body Hamiltonians in the chaotic regime.

Chaos and Ergodicity across the Energy Spectrum of Interacting Bosons

Lukas Pausch et al.

Summary: In this study, the chaotic phase of the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian is identified through the energy-resolved correlation between spectral features and structural changes of the associated eigenstates, as revealed by their generalized fractal dimensions. The eigenvectors are found to become ergodic in the thermodynamic limit, in the configuration space Fock basis, with random matrix theory providing a remarkable description of their typical structure. However, as the Hilbert space dimension grows, the distributions of the generalized fractal dimensions show increasing distinguishability from random matrix theory.

Signatures of Chaos in Nonintegrable Models of Quantum Field Theories

Miha Srdinsek et al.

Summary: We studied signatures of quantum chaos in (1 + 1)D quantum field theory models using the Hamiltonian truncation method. The level spacing statistics approach the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE), while the eigenvector components exhibit a distribution markedly different from the expected Gaussian behavior. The transition to chaotic behavior in level spacing statistics occurs in the perturbative regime, and the distribution of eigenvector components does not appear to change or approach Gaussian behavior even for relatively large perturbations.

Nonequilibrium Dynamics and Weakly Broken Integrability

Joseph Durnin et al.

Summary: Motivated by experiments on cold atomic gases, a quantum kinetic approach to weakly perturbed integrable models out of equilibrium is developed. Using exact matrix elements, an analytical approach to real-time dynamics is established, providing predictions for physical quantities' time evolution and conceptual links between quantum many-body dynamics and classical theory. Specific perturbations that do not cause thermalization in the weakly perturbed regime are identified.

Rare thermal bubbles at the many-body localization transition from the Fock space point of view

Giuseppe De Tomasi et al.

Summary: In this paper, the authors investigate the many-body localization (MBL) transition and its relation to eigenstate structures in the Fock space. They introduce a radial probability distribution and analyze the nonself-averaging property of the many-body fractal dimension D-q. Through analytical evidence and examples, they demonstrate the consistency of MBL transition in the Fock space with the avalanche mechanism for delocalization. The MBL transition is seen as a transition from ergodic states to nonergodic extended states, providing insights into the disorder scaling for the Anderson localization transition.

Quantum chaos and physical distance between quantum states

Zhenduo Wang et al.

Summary: The introduction of physical distance in quantum dynamics reveals genuine chaos in the behavior of quantum states. The physical distance between two mutually orthogonal quantum states can be very small, causing initially close states to diverge during quantum dynamical evolution. This approach allows for the definition of quantum Lyapunov exponent and chaos measure, leading to a quantum analog of classical Poincare section to distinguish regular and chaotic regions in quantum dynamics.

Eigenstate thermalization scaling in approaching the classical limit

Goran Nakerst et al.

Summary: The study explores the effect of increasing the particle number in fixed lattice topologies in the classical or semiclassical limit, focusing on the behavior of the Bose-Hubbard system. It is found that for larger lattices, the ETH scaling of physical midspectrum eigenstates follows the ideal (Gaussian) expectation, while for smaller lattices, anomalous scaling occurs with a different exponent. Various plausible mechanisms for this anomaly are examined.
