Aptamers targeting SARS-COV-2: a promising tool to fight against COVID-19

Yang Zhang et al.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2, the cause of COVID-19, is a major contributor to global mortality. Existing antigen/antibody-based immunoassays and neutralizing antibodies are often ineffective against emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants, highlighting the urgent need for new approaches. Aptamers have been successfully used for detecting and inhibiting various viruses, and hold promise in the fight against COVID-19. This review discusses recent advances and future trends in the development of aptamer-based approaches for the diagnosis and treatment of SARS-CoV-2.

Analytical sensitivity of COVID-19 rapid antigen tests: A case for a robust reference standard

Casey J. Toft et al.

Summary: Aggressive diagnostic testing is crucial in preventing the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in vulnerable populations. COVID-19 rapid antigen tests (RATs) are the preferred diagnostic platform, but they lack the necessary quantitative analytics. Therefore, a novel reference standard using NP-GFP is proposed to accurately measure and compare the analytical sensitivity of RATs.

Reproducible fabrication of gold nanostar monolayers for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy-based trace detection

Feng Zhang et al.

Summary: Rapid, simple, and reliable detection of trace level toxics is important for public health. In this study, a facile method for reproducibly preparing highly uniform self-assembled monolayers of gold nanostars (Au NSs SAM) as SERS substrates was reported. The Au NSs SAM substrates exhibited constant SERS signals without statistical differences and could detect dye molecules at low concentrations. The Au NSs SAM was also successfully applied for trace detection of tetracycline residues in water.

Rapid detection of paraquat residues in green tea using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) coupled with gold nanostars

Min-Hui Lin et al.

Summary: This study established a novel, facile, and rapid testing technique using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) coupled with gold nanostars as a SERS substrate to detect pesticide residues in green tea. The spiky tips of gold nanostars acted as SERS hot spots to enhance Raman signals, while the rough topography increased surface area for better substrate-analyte interactions. The SERS method showed great potential for qualification and quantification of trace contaminants in foods with a detection limit of 0.2 mg/kg for paraquat in green tea samples.
