Interface-Induced Conservation of Momentum Leads to Chiral-Induced Spin Selectivity

Clemens Vittmann et al.

Summary: This study investigates the nonequilibrium dynamics of electron transmission from a straight waveguide to a helix with spin-orbit coupling. Transmission is found to be spin-selective, leading to large spin polarizations of the itinerant electrons. The degree of spin selectivity depends on the width of the interface region, and no polarization is observed for single-point couplings. The study identifies interface structure and conservation of momentum as crucial factors for chiral-induced spin selectivity, and confirms the robustness of this mechanism against static disorder.

Charge and Spin Dynamics and Enantioselectivity in Chiral Molecules

J. Fransson

Summary: This study investigates the charge and spin dynamics in chiral molecules after their immediate coupling to an external metallic reservoir. The research describes the induction of spin polarization in chiral structures as a response to charge dynamics. The dynamics show that chirality-induced spin selectivity is an excited state phenomenon that can be partially explained using a simplistic single-particle description in the transient regime, but in the stationary limit, electron correlations, such as electron-vibration interactions, are crucial in sustaining an intrinsic spin anisotropy that leads to a nonvanishing spin selectivity. Furthermore, the dynamics provide insight into enantiomer separation based on different acquired spin polarizations.

Chiral molecular intercalation superlattices

Qi Qian et al.

Summary: The discovery of chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) allows the manipulation of spin orientation without external magnetic fields, opening up new possibilities for spintronic device designs. However, current systems often suffer from issues such as high inhomogeneity, low spin selectivity, limited stability, and difficulties in forming robust spintronic devices. In this study, a new class of chiral molecular intercalation superlattices (CMIS) was developed as a solid-state chiral material platform for exploring CISS. The CMIS exhibited highly ordered superlattice structures and showed chirality-dependent signals, enabling the creation of spin-selective tunnelling junctions with significant tunnelling magnetoresistance ratio and spin polarization ratio. With the wide range of 2DACs and chiral molecules available, CMIS offer a rich family of artificial chiral materials to investigate the CISS effect and explore its potential for new spintronic devices.

Unusual Spin Polarization in the Chirality-Induced Spin Selectivity

Yotam Wolf et al.

Summary: Chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) refers to the phenomenon where electrons become spin polarized after passing through chiral molecules in a nanoscale transport device or in photoemission experiments. Contrary to common belief, this study finds that both transmitted and reflected electrons exhibit the same type of spin polarization, which is a universal characteristic for two-terminal devices. Chiral molecules act as spin polarizers rather than spin filters, and the direction of spin polarization is determined by the molecule's chirality and the incident direction of the electron. The magnitude of spin polarization is influenced by local spin-orbit coupling in the device.
