Qualitative Research Methods in Chronic Disease: Introduction and Opportunities to Promote Health Equity

Rachel C. Shelton et al.

Summary: Historically, the use and value of qualitative research methods in public health research on chronic disease have been underestimated. This has limited the field's ability to gain a deeper understanding of health behaviors, explain the impacts of interventions, and develop and test theories. This article introduces frameworks and approaches for qualitative research, discusses their application in advancing health equity, and highlights strengths and challenges. It provides an overview of data collection, sampling, and analysis, and explores research questions that can be addressed using qualitative methods in chronic disease research. The article concludes with recommendations to strategically apply rigorous qualitative methods to enhance health equity across the evidence generation continuum.

A review on differential effects of dietary fatty acids on weight, appetite and energy expenditure

Vahideh Behrouz et al.

Summary: The quality and quantity of dietary fatty acids play a significant role in weight, appetite, and energy expenditure. Saturated fatty acids have a greater impact on appetite control, while mono-unsaturated fats have stimulatory effects on energy expenditure and can be beneficial in long-term weight control. Poly unsaturated fats, including n-3 and n-6, have similar effects on increasing energy expenditure but act differently in controlling weight and appetite.

Risk Factors Analysis and Management of Cardiometabolic-Based Chronic Disease in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

Chaitanya Dutt et al.

Summary: The epidemic of obesity and chronic diseases based on adiposity pose a significant challenge, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Metabolic inflexibility serves as a common link between insulin resistance and cardiometabolic-based chronic diseases (CMBCD). The heterogeneous nature of CMBCD in the LMIC population highlights the importance of considering socio-economic and cultural contexts. Targeting pathways that address mitochondrial dysfunction may have therapeutic benefits for the entire spectrum of CMBCD.
