Fabrication of mechanically robust urushiol-based polymer coatings with excellent self-healing property and hydrophobicity

Wan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel strategy based on Diels-Alder bond for the fabrication of self-healing urushiol-based coatings with highly efficient self-healing performances and robust mechanical properties. By modifying natural urushiol and crosslinking it, a thermally reversible and self-healing bio-based coating is obtained. The ratio of urushiol furan derivative to bismaleimide is found to significantly affect the properties of the self-healing coatings. The optimized formulation results in a coating with high self-healing efficiency, hardness, and contact angle.

Construction of self-healing polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane by cucurbit[8]uril hydrogel via RTIPS method and host-guest chemistry

Haotian Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, a self-healing polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane was developed using host-guest chemistry and reverse thermally induced phase separation method. The membrane showed excellent self-healing performance, better mechanical properties, high permeation flux, and BSA rejection rate. The self-healing was attributed to the swelling of CB [8] hydrogel, molecular interdiffusion, and host-guest interaction. The prepared membrane had a homogeneous and porous structure, improving permeability and mechanical properties. Evaluation of the membrane properties showed enhanced surface hydrophilicity and thermal stability with increased CB [8] content. The optimal membrane exhibited a pure water flux of 2100.5 L/m2 h and a BSA rejection rate of 86.0%. This work suggests that pore-filled CB [8] hydrogel membrane is a promising approach for developing self-healing polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes.

Fluorescent self-healing waterborne polyurethane based on naphthalimide derivatives and its application in anti-counterfeiting

Cheng Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a naphthalimide derivative BHHNA-AM with high fluorescence and strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds was successfully synthesized and used as a chain extender to prepare a fluorescent waterborne polyurethane (PUAM) with self-healing properties. The presence of highly rigid conjugate plane in molecules and strong non-covalent interaction between main chain and side chain amide group enabled the PUAM film to autonomously restore its self-healing rate from 47.73% to 94.62% within 9 hours at room temperature. This PUAM can be widely utilized as a thermoplastic adhesive and anti-counterfeiting ink due to its excellent properties.
