Bisymmetric coherent acoustic tweezers based on modulation of surface acoustic waves for dynamic and reconfigurable cluster manipulation of particles and cells

Hemin Pan et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel approach of acoustic tweezers, using bisymmetric coherent acoustic tweezers to modulate the shape of acoustic pressure fields. The experimental tests demonstrate the capability of precise, contactless, and biocompatible cluster manipulation of particles and cells, and the device also allows for rapid switching, shape regulation, and directional translation. This technique shows great potential in the fields of targeted cellular assembly, biological 3D printing, and targeted release of drugs.

The role of channel height and actuation method on particle manipulation in surface acoustic wave (SAW)-driven microfluidic devices

Citsabehsan Devendran et al.

Summary: Surface acoustic wave (SAW) micromanipulation offers modularity, easy integration into microfluidic devices and a high degree of flexibility. However, reducing the threshold for manipulating smaller particles is a major challenge. The novel excitation configuration based on diffractive-acoustic SAW (DASAW) actuation shows promise in reducing the critical minimum particle size that can be manipulated, with the ability to tune the streaming magnitude by changing the channel height.

A combined velocity and temperature measurement with an LED and a low-speed camera

Zhichao Deng et al.

Summary: APTV combined with luminescence lifetime imaging can measure the temperature and velocity components in a volume through a single optical access, using an LED instead of a pulsed laser to prevent additional heating, and replacing a high-speed camera with an ordinary double-frame camera for cost efficiency, making it a suitable measurement technique for microfluidic research.

On the acoustically induced fluid flow in particle separation systems employing standing surface acoustic waves - Part I

Sebastian Sachs et al.

Summary: By integrating surface acoustic waves (SAW) into microfluidic devices, microparticle systems can be precisely fractionated on flexible Lab-on-a-Chip platforms. This study reveals the fluid flow induced by pseudo-standing acoustic wave fields and identifies critical parameters for acoustofluidic separation system design.

On the acoustically induced fluid flow in particle separation systems employing standing surface acoustic waves - Part II

Sebastian Sachs et al.

Summary: This study provides a deep insight into the influence of acoustically induced flow on the fractionation of suspended particles using quantitative three-dimensional velocity measurements. The results show that broadly extended vortices are formed due to large gradients in the acoustic fields, which are essential for a holistic analysis of the flow phenomena.

Defocus particle tracking: a comparison of methods based on model functions, cross-correlation, and neural networks

Rune Barnkob et al.

Summary: Defocus particle tracking (DPT) is increasingly important for determining particle trajectories in three dimensions with a single-camera system. Current methods include MF methods and CC methods, with potential for neural network methods to play a significant future role. MF methods work well in low-concentration cases, while CC methods are more robust in cases of larger particle concentration and overlap, with NN methods showing potential for development despite lower performance in comparison.

The waves that make the pattern: a review on acoustic manipulation in biomedical research

A. G. Guex et al.

Summary: Novel approaches that combine technology, biomaterial design, and cutting-edge cell culture have been increasingly recognized as important for advancing tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Acoustic manipulation, which uses sound-induced forces to control cellular organization within a carrier matrix remotely, has emerged as a particularly promising method in the last decade. This manipulation has evolved from arranging micro- or nanoparticles in 2D to assembling multiple cell types or organoids into highly complex in vitro tissues.
