Differences in pseudogene evolution contributed to the contrasting flavors of turnip and Chiifu, two Brassica rapa subspecies

Xin Yin et al.

Summary: Pseudogenes are nonfunctional genes that have regulatory effects on plant adaptation and diversification. This study sequenced the genome of turnip and characterized pseudogenes in diploid Brassica species/subspecies. The results showed that the number of pseudogenes was highest in Brassica oleracea, followed by B. rapa and then Brassica nigra, indicating that pseudogene differences arose after species differentiation. Pseudogene differences among subspecies were reflected in the flavor-related glucosinolate pathway. These findings revealed that pseudogene differences influenced the evolution of flavor-associated genes, ultimately resulting in the different flavors of turnip and Chiifu.

GENESPACE tracks regions of interest and gene copy number variation across multiple genomes

John T. Lovell et al.

Summary: The development of multiple chromosome-scale reference genome sequences has provided a high-resolution view of molecular evolution patterns and processes. However, leveraging information across multiple genomes remains a challenge in eukaryotic systems. GENESPACE addresses these challenges by integrating conserved gene order and orthology. It offers a significant contribution to existing gene family and synteny programs, particularly in complex genomes.

Integrated analyses reveal evolutionarily conserved and specific injury response genes in dorsal root ganglion

Lian Xu et al.

Summary: This study re-analyzed 21 RNA-seq datasets and identified 53 evolutionarily conserved injury response genes, including species-preference injury response candidates and genes related to pre-regenerative and regenerating states. Furthermore, a large sex difference in response to sciatic nerve injury was found.
