Polarised W plus j production at the LHC: a study at NNLO QCD accuracy

Mathieu Pellen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the polarisation of W-bosons produced in association with one jet at the LHC. The necessary theoretical elements for accurately extracting polarisation fractions are provided. New polarised predictions up to NNLO QCD accuracy using the narrow-width approximation are presented in inclusive and fiducial phase spaces. Results in the fiducial phase space are compared to a full off-shell computation and experimental data. Finally, the polarisation fractions are fitted using shape templates, demonstrating that NNLO corrections significantly improve their determination.

Search for heavy resonances decaying to ZZ or ZW and axion-like particles mediating nonresonant ZZ or ZH production at √s=13 TeV

A. Tumasyan et al.

Summary: A search for heavy resonances decaying to ZZ or ZW, as well as axion-like particles (ALPs) mediating nonresonant ZZ or ZH production, has been conducted. The analysis, based on data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, yields exclusion limits on the production of these resonances and particles, and provides upper limits on the ALP-mediated diboson production cross section and ALP couplings to standard model particles.

W ± Z production at NNLO QCD and NLO EW matched to parton showers with MiNNLOPS

Jonas M. Lindert et al.

Summary: This study considers W +/- Z production in hadronic collisions and provides high-precision predictions using QCD and electroweak (EW) perturbation theory matched to parton showers. The research combines next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections with parton showers and next-to-leading order EW corrections with parton showers. The results show that NNLO QCD predictions, including QCD and QED shower effects, provide a good approximation in the majority of the phase space, while the EW effects become increasingly important in the high-energy tails of the kinematic distributions.

Measurement of the inclusive and differential WZ production cross sections, polarization angles, and triple gauge couplings in pp collisions at √s=13 TeV

A. Tumasyan et al.

Summary: The associated production of W and Z bosons in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV is studied using the CMS detector at the LHC. Measurements of the total inclusive production cross section, as well as fiducial and differential cross sections for key observables, are performed. The results include the first observation of longitudinally polarized W bosons in WZ production and provide new constraints on beyond-the-standard-model contributions.

Breaking down the entire spectrum of spin correlations of a pair of particles involving fermions and gauge bosons

Rafiqul Rahaman et al.

Summary: We discuss a formalism for spin correlations and polarizations in two-particle systems with different spins. The formalism is demonstrated in the processes e-e+-> t t over line, gb -> tW-, and e-e+ -> ZZ in the standard model. We investigate the effect of anomalous couplings on polarizations and spin correlations in these processes and compare their strengths. The results show that spin correlations have the potential to provide a significant improvement over polarizations in probing anomalous couplings.

Doubly-polarized W Z hadronic cross sections at NLO QCD plus EW accuracy

Duc Ninh Le et al.

Summary: In this study, new results for next-to-leading order electroweak corrections to double polarization signals in the WZ production channel at LHC are presented. It is found that the EW corrections have the most significant impact on the transverse momentum distributions of doubly longitudinal polarization, with a reduction of about -10% compared to the NLO QCD prediction at p(T, e) approximately 200 GeV, which falls within the accessible energy range of the current LHC data.

Cuts for two-body decays at colliders

Gavin P. Salam et al.

Summary: Fixed-order perturbative calculations for two-body decay processes at colliders exhibit sensitivity to unphysically low momentum scales and poor convergence, especially in the case of H -> γγ in gluon fusion. By making simple modifications to fiducial cuts, such as replacing linear dependence with quadratic dependence, significant improvements in perturbative expansion behavior can be achieved. More sophisticated cuts can even achieve Higgs p(t)-independent acceptance at low p(t) with various advantages.

Vector boson polarizations in the decay of the Standard Model Higgs

Ezio Maina

Summary: The kinematic distributions of lepton pairs in the decay of the Standard Model Higgs to ZZ and WW are related to the polarization fractions of the virtual vector bosons, which can be analytically decomposed. The measurement of vector polarization fractions in Higgs decay would provide a test of the Standard Model, while observables such as invariant mass of charged leptons and lepton angular distribution are sensitive indicators of boson polarizations.

Sensitivity to longitudinal vector boson scattering in semileptonic final states at the HL-LHC

Jennifer Roloff et al.

Summary: Longitudinal vector boson scattering is an important probe of electroweak symmetry breaking and the properties of the Higgs boson, but it is a challenging process to study due to its small production cross section and the difficulty in separating different polarization states. This study focuses on the sensitivity to longitudinal WV vector boson scattering at the high-luminosity LHC in semi-leptonic final states, which have larger background contributions but benefit from a higher signal cross section. By reconstructing event kinematics using the W boson mass constraint and jet substructure, sensitivities around three standard deviations at the HL-LHC are achievable, making this channel competitive with fully leptonic counterparts.
