Evidence of fNIRS-Based Prefrontal Cortex Hypoactivity in Obesity and Binge-Eating Disorder

Sarah A. Roesch et al.

Summary: This study investigated the differences in food-specific brain signaling, impulsivity, and emotional dysregulation between individuals with obesity and binge-eating disorder compared to a normal weight group using fNIRS technology. The results showed decreased PFC responses in individuals with obesity and obesity + BED groups compared to the normal weight group, with stronger PFC responses associated with higher impulsivity and weaker responses associated with more emotional dysregulation. Temporal differences were also found in left orbitofrontal cortex responses, indicating a specific phenotype in BED within the obesity population.

The Neurobiology of Binge-eating Disorder Compared with Obesity: Implications for Differential Therapeutics

Rebecca G. Boswell et al.

Summary: There are distinct differences in the neurobiology between BED and obesity, with BED characterized by higher impulsivity and compulsivity. Therapeutic agents targeting both reward and executive function systems may be particularly effective for BED.
