Theory of Dynamical Phase Transitions in Quantum Systems with Symmetry-Breaking Eigenstates

Angel L. Corps et al.

Summary: We present a theory for two types of dynamical quantum phase transitions, DPT-I and DPT-II, based on minimal assumptions of symmetry. In the case of collective systems with infinite-range interactions, both types are triggered by excited-state quantum phase transitions. The existence of an additional conserved charge below the critical energy allows for a nonzero value of the dynamical order parameter in DPTs-I and prevents the main mechanism causing nonanalyticities in the return probability, characteristic of DPTs-II.

Chaos in a deformed Dicke model

Angel L. Corps et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between excited state quantum phase transitions and chaos development using a modified Dicke model. It is found that the presence of quantum chaos is closely related to the existence of a quantum conserved number, which allows for the coexistence of chaos and regularity at the same energy in some cases.

Quantum fidelity susceptibility in excited state quantum phase transitions: Application to the bending spectra of nonrigid molecules

Jamil Khalouf-Rivera et al.

Summary: This study characterizes excited state quantum phase transitions in the two-dimensional vibron model using quantum fidelity susceptibility and comparing the results with the participation ratio. It also applies the findings to determine the linear or bent character of different overtones for specific bending modes of six molecular species. The optimized eigenvalues and eigenstates are used in three cases, while published results are used for the other three cases.

Dynamical phase transitions in the collisionless pre-thermal states of isolated quantum systems: theory and experiments

Jamir Marino et al.

Summary: This article presents an overview of dynamical phase transitions (DPTs) in isolated quantum systems quenched out of equilibrium. The focus is on non-equilibrium transitions characterized by an order parameter, with distinct behavior on either side of a dynamical critical point. These long-lived prethermal phenomena occur in a regime where inelastic collisions cannot thermalize the system, leading to phases that break detailed balance and cannot be explained by traditional thermodynamics. The article covers cold atoms and condensed matter systems and explores theoretical models such as quantum magnets, quantum field theories, and Fermi-Hubbard models. It also discusses experimental explorations of DPTs in condensed matter and atomic, molecular, and optical systems.

Excited-state quantum phase transitions in the anharmonic Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model: Static aspects

J. Gamito et al.

Summary: The paper investigates the second-order ground-state quantum phase transition and the excited-state quantum phase transition in the basic Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. The inclusion of an anharmonic term leads to a second excited-state quantum phase transition of a different nature. This transition is characterized using the mean field limit of the model, and can be properly described using the order parameter of the ground-state quantum phase transition, the energy gap between adjacent states, the participation ratio, and the quantum fidelity susceptibility.

Dynamical and excited-state quantum phase transitions in collective systems

Angel L. Corps et al.

Summary: We study dynamical phase transitions (DPTs) in quantum many-body systems with infinite-range interaction and establish a connection between the two types of known DPTs and excited-state quantum phase transition (ESQPT) in collective models. We find that DPTs-I occur as a result of symmetry restoration after a quench, with an ESQPT precisely demarcating the transition between the broken-symmetry and symmetry-restored phases. We describe the order parameters of DPTs-I using a generalization of the microcanonical ensemble and consider the information loss caused by ESQPT. Additionally, we analyze the mechanism for DPTs-II and its dependence on the side of the ESQPT where the quench ends.

Exceptional spectral phase in a dissipative collective spin model

Alvaro Rubio-Garcia et al.

Summary: This article studies a model of a quantum spin weakly coupled to a spin-polarized Markovian environment, and discovers a special Liouvillian spectral phase. The exceptional phase is composed of second-order exceptional points, and it leads to a slower evolution that cannot be described by exponential decay. This phase is separated from the normal phase by a critical line.

Dynamical quantum phase transitions in strongly correlated two-dimensional spin lattices following a quench

Fredrik Brange et al.

Summary: Dynamical quantum phase transitions are currently a hot topic in research, with advanced numerical methods being used to explore this phenomenon. However, the investigation of two-dimensional systems has been challenging due to the limitations of these methods in one dimension. In this study, evidence of dynamical quantum phase transitions in strongly correlated spin lattices in two dimensions is presented. The cumulant method is used to determine the zeros of the Loschmidt amplitude in the complex plane of time, and the crossing points of the thermodynamic lines of zeros with the real-time axis are predicted, where dynamical quantum phase transitions occur. The critical times of a two-dimensional quantum Ising lattice and the XYZ model with ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic couplings are found. It is also shown how dynamical quantum phase transitions can be predicted by measuring the initial energy fluctuations, for example in quantum simulators or other engineered quantum systems.

Energy cat states induced by a parity-breaking excited-state quantum phase transition

Angel L. Corps et al.

Summary: We show that excited-state quantum phase transitions can be used to engineer an energy cat state in a system where the parity symmetry is broken. By adding a parity-breaking term, we observe the formation of three excited-state phases and level crossings. We also find that a generalized microcanonical ensemble with two different average energies is required to describe equilibrium states in this situation.

Dynamical phase transitions in the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model

Tomohiro Hashizume et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate two separate notions of dynamical phase transitions in the two-dimensional nearest-neighbor transverse-field Ising model. Our numerical results suggest that quenches below the dynamical critical point result in a ferromagnetic long-time steady state, while quenches above the dynamical critical point lead to a paramagnetic long-time steady state. Quenches slightly above the dynamical critical point exhibit a coexistence region.

Excited-state quantum phase transitions

Pavel Cejnar et al.

Summary: The paper reviews the effects of excited-state quantum phase transitions (ESQPTs) in interacting many-body systems with finite numbers of collective degrees of freedom. It classifies typical ESQPT signatures in the spectra of energy eigenstates with respect to the underlying classical dynamics, outlining a variety of quantum systems in which they occur. The thermodynamic and dynamic consequences of ESQPTs, like those in microcanonical thermodynamics, quantum quench dynamics, and in the response to nearly adiabatic or periodic driving are described. Suggestions for generalizations of the ESQPT concept in periodic lattices and in resonant tunneling systems are also mentioned.

Determination of Dynamical Quantum Phase Transitions in Strongly Correlated Many-Body Systems Using Loschmidt Cumulants

Sebastiano Peotta et al.

Summary: Dynamical phase transitions extend the concept of criticality to nonstationary settings, involving sudden changes in the macroscopic properties of time-evolving quantum systems. The research combines symmetry, topology, and nonequilibrium physics, utilizing Loschmidt cumulants to determine critical times of interacting many-body systems. Experimental prospects include predicting the first critical time of a quantum many-body system by measuring energy fluctuations in the initial state, with potential implementation on near-term quantum computers with a limited number of qubits.

Stabilization of product states and excited-state quantum phase transitions in a coupled qubit-field system

Pavel Stransky et al.

Summary: In this study, a system of a single qubit interacting with a soft-mode bosonic field is analyzed, revealing a complex arrangement of quantum phase transitions in both the ground and excited states. The experimentally observable signature of some transitions is a dynamical stabilization of a fully factorized qubit-field state involving the field vacuum, particularly in the ultrastrong coupling regime. The degree of stabilization abruptly varies with interaction parameters and increases with the softness of the field mode, showing connections to various forms of excited-state quantum phase transitions.

Signatures of excited-state quantum phase transitions in quantum many-body systems: Phase space analysis

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the phase space signatures of excited-state quantum phase transitions (ESQPTs) in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick and coupled top models using the Husimi quasiprobability distribution. It shows how ESQPT can be identified through the dynamics of the Husimi function and long-time averaged Husimi function. By calculating the second moment and Wherl entropy of the Husimi function, the critical points of ESQPT in both models are estimated with good agreement with analytical results, providing solid evidence that phase space methods are effective for detecting and studying ESQPTs.
