Chemically Induced Activity Recovery of Isolated Lithium in Anode- free Lithium Metal Batteries

Chengwei Ma et al.

Summary: The anode-free lithium metal battery is considered a promising choice for the new generation energy storage system due to its higher energy density and safety compared to traditional lithium metal batteries. However, the continuous formation of SEI or isolated Li limits its practical application. This study demonstrates an abnormal phenomenon where the capacity loss in isolated Li can be recovered after cycles when it reconnects with a deposited Li metal layer, thanks to a chemically induced block copolymer coating. Based on this mechanism, a strategy to slow down capacity decay in anode-free lithium metal batteries is proposed.
