Electroencephalogram-Based Motor Imagery Brain-Computer Interface Using Multivariate Iterative Filtering and Spatial Filtering

Kritiprasanna Das et al.

Summary: In motor imagery-based brain-computer interface, the common spatial pattern (CSP) is widely used for discriminant feature extraction. However, the performance of CSP is highly dependent on manually selected or broad frequency bands. Our proposed approach, combining multivariate iterative filtering (MIF) and CSP (MIFCSP), automatically selects optimal frequency bands based on MIF for discriminant feature extraction. Experimental results show that the MIFCSP method achieves superior classification performance in different MI tasks.

Brain network topology and future development of freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease: a longitudinal study

Clinical and imaging evidence of brain-first and body-first Parkinson's disease

Jacob Horsager et al.

Summary: Braak's hypothesis has had a significant influence on Parkinson's disease research. However, a new model suggests that the existing model does not apply to all patients. By using REM-sleep behavior disorder as a clinical identifier, the disease can be divided into two subtypes: body-first PD and brain-first PD. These subtypes show differences in clinical symptoms and imaging features.

Analysis of ECG Signals by Dynamic Mode Decomposition

Honorine Niyigena Ingabire et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new method using cybernetics principles to analyze ECG signals by decomposing them into subsystems, evaluating the stability of these subsystems, and using classifiers to classify different cardiac pathologies. The results show significant features for differentiating pathologies and superiority over existing methods, indicating the potential of this approach in understanding cardiac mechanisms and disease diagnosis.

Implication of EEG theta/alpha and theta/beta ratio in Alzheimer's and Lewy body disease

Kyoungwon Baik et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the patterns of quantitative EEG in patients with Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body disease, and mixed disease. It was found that patients in the LBD and mixed disease groups had higher TBR values, while the presence of AD was not associated with TBR. Among cognitively impaired patients, higher TAR values were associated with language, memory, and visuospatial dysfunction, while higher TBR values were associated with memory and frontal/executive dysfunction.

Ensemble Boosting and Bagging Based Machine Learning Models for Groundwater Potential Prediction

Amirhosein Mosavi et al.

Summary: The study aims to evaluate four ensemble models for groundwater potential prediction, with RF model outperforming the others. Key contributing variables include topographic position index and valley depth. The predicted groundwater potential maps can assist water managers and policymakers in optimal freshwater exploitation.

Brain Network Analysis by Stable and Unstable EEG Components

Shengnan Liu et al.

Summary: The study proposed a new perspective on EEG BN analysis by constructing stable and unstable BNs, which can be used for Parkinson's disease diagnosis. The topological attributes significantly differentiate between PD patients and healthy controls, showing higher values compared to traditional brain networks. This method holds biological significance and can be widely applied in medical and engineering fields.

Entropy modulation of electroencephalographic signals in physiological aging

Francesca Alu et al.

Summary: The study found that elderly participants showed higher levels of disorder in the central, parietal, and occipital brain regions compared to younger participants, indicating a decrease in neural network synchronization associated with the aging process. This reduced synchronization may be due to the decline in cerebral connections typically observed in aging, highlighting the importance of understanding brain dynamics using entropy parameters for developing personalized rehabilitation programs and future research on neurodegenerative diseases.

The impact of distinct cognitive dual-tasks on gait in Parkinson's disease and the associations with the clinical features of Parkinson's disease

Halil Onder et al.

Summary: Most cognitive dual-tasks resulted in deterioration in gait performance in PD patients, particularly in those with FOG. The completion time of TUG under the dual-task of counting down days was longer in FOG (+) PD subjects. Additionally, the TUG duration under the dual-task of counting down days was positively correlated with UPDRS-motor scores and FOG scores.

Analysis of Functional Brain Network in MDD Based on Improved Empirical Mode Decomposition With Resting State EEG Data

Xuexiao Shao et al.

Summary: This study proposed a network decomposition model based on Improved EMD for time-frequency analysis of brain functional network in major depressive disorder (MDD). The results showed that Improved EMD decomposed IMFs were more stable, and the changes in MDD functional connectivity on different IMFs were related to pathological changes, providing potential biomarkers for clinical diagnosis. Additionally, significant differences between MDD and normal controls were found in three network metrics, confirming the aberrant brain network structure of MDD in hubs characteristics.
