Magnetization dynamics with time-dependent spin-density functional theory: Significance of exchange-correlation torques

Daniel Hill et al.

Summary: In spin-density functional theory (SDFT) for noncollinear magnetic materials, the importance of xc magnetic fields is not well explored. Benchmark solutions of a five-site extended Hubbard lattice in the presence of spin-orbit coupling are compared with SDFT results using orbital-dependent exchange-only approximations. The exchange-only approximation can reasonably describe the magnetization dynamics for weak to moderate interactions, but both exchange and correlation torques must be considered for stronger interactions or near phase transitions between magnetically ordered and frustrated phases.

Noncollinear density functional theory

Zhichen Pu et al.

Summary: This study proposes an approach to generalize collinear functionals to noncollinear functionals, ensuring the correct collinear limit and well-defined functional derivatives. It also suggests the potential application of local torque in spin dynamics.

DFT exchange: sharing perspectives on the workhorse of quantum chemistry and materials science

Andrew M. Teale et al.

Summary: This paper provides an informal review and discussion on the history, present status, and future of density-functional theory (DFT) by 70 workers in the field. The format of a roundtable discussion allowed participants to express their views through 302 individual contributions to a preset list of 26 questions. Supported by a bibliography of 777 entries, the paper offers a comprehensive snapshot of DFT in 2022.

Model DFT exchange holes and the exact exchange hole: Similarities and differences

Yiting Wang et al.

Summary: Exchange and correlation holes are fundamental quantum concepts for understanding electron interactions, with the exact exchange hole being of particular interest due to its rigorous derivation from first principles. This study develops an algorithm for computing the spherically averaged exact exchange hole and identifies the BR89 exchange hole as more suitable for isolated atoms. Further approximations for exchange holes are still in demand for various applications.

Spin-orbit coupling from a two-component self-consistent approach. II. Non-collinear density functional theories

Jacques K. Desmarais et al.

Summary: This study revises formal and numerical aspects of collinear and non-collinear density functional theories in the context of a two-component self-consistent treatment of spin-orbit coupling. Theoretical and numerical analyses confirm the capability of non-collinear approaches and highlight the importance of an effective screening algorithm for numerical stability. Comparison of two non-collinear formulations for GGA functionals is provided, showing that both are adequate for total energy calculations with sufficiently fine grid screening.
