Ammonia pools in zeolites for direct fabrication of catalytic centers

Jie Yao et al.

Summary: Reduction is a crucial step in the fabrication of metal-zeolite catalysts. This study reveals that zeolites after ion exchange of ammonium exhibit an interesting and unexpected self-reducing feature, enabling precise control of the reduction process and inhibiting the growth of metal size. This new ammonia pool effect is not influenced by zeolite structures and works well with reducible metals. This methodology has the potential to greatly enhance the fabrication and design of low-cost and high-activity metal-zeolite catalysts.

Zeolite-Encapsulated Cu Nanoparticles for the Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol

Peng Cao et al.

Summary: The study successfully prepared well-defined Cu nanoparticles encapsulated within titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) by an in situ encapsulation approach, showing enhanced activity and selectivity for the selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol. The Na-Cu@TS-1 catalyst exhibited high turnover frequency value and effective suppression of metal aggregation and leaching during catalysis due to the confined environment of the zeolite and electronic interaction between encapsulated Cu nanoparticles and Ti species. Na species in the catalyst not only modulate the acid/base property of the zeolite and suppress side reactions, but also facilitate the FFL hydrogenation by inducing an electronic-rich state in the encapsulated Cu species.
