Potentially toxic elements in cascade dams-influenced river originated from Tibetan Plateau

Jie Zeng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the dams-influenced Lancangjiang River basin. The results showed that Mn, V, Zn, Cr, Ni, Pb, Cu, Co, Sb, Mo, Tl, and Cd were the main PTEs in SPM, with Sb and Cd showing higher enrichment. Cr and Ni were identified as major toxic elements in SPM. Most of the PTEs were transported in the form of SPM, with high partition coefficients observed. Natural inputs, such as soil erosion, contributed to the majority of V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, and Tl, while fuel burning was the main source of Zn, Pb, and Cd. Industrial waste and porphyry copper/molybdenum deposits were also identified as sources of certain PTEs.

Te Zhang et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the impacts of human activities on the propagation of meteorological drought to hydrological drought using an effective framework. The results show that human activities significantly disturb hydrological drought variations and propagation characteristics. The thresholds for triggering different levels of hydrological drought generally become larger with changing rates, but smaller in spring and winter. The study provides important insights for drought preparedness and adaptation strategies.

A holistic assessment of spatiotemporal variation, driving factors, and risks influencing river water quality in the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Xueping Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatiotemporal distribution and trends of water quality in the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The results showed that most monitoring stations had alkaline water and experienced a decrease in water temperature and dissolved oxygen. Parameters such as chemical oxygen demand, permanganate index, five-day biochemical oxygen demand, total phosphorus, and fluoride exhibited a downward trend. Total nitrogen concentration showed no significant decrease. Elevation, urban land, cropland, temperature, and precipitation were identified as factors influencing water quality. Rivers monitored had a relatively low risk of degradation in water quality between 2015 and 2019.

Jinghui Dou et al.

Summary: Scientific understanding of the scale effects of landscape structure on water quality is crucial for national land planning and water environment management. This study developed a novel mix scale division method and used water quality data from the Yellow River Basin to quantitatively identify the spatial scale effects of various landscape indexes on water quality and the non-linear response of water quality along the gradient of landscape indicators. The study revealed significant impacts of landscape indexes related to urbanization and agricultural lands on water quality, with these impacts being more pronounced during the rainy season.

Using EEM-PARAFAC to identify and trace the pollution sources of surface water with receptor models in Taihu Lake Basin, China

Xu Wang et al.

Summary: This study collected surface water samples from Taihu Lake Basin and used multivariate statistical analysis to determine the optimal water quality parameters for the receptor models. Through the analysis of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and Pearson correlation analysis, the potential pollution sources in surface water, including agricultural activities, domestic sewage, phytoplankton growth/terrestrial input, and industrial sources, were successfully identified. Quantification of pollution sources was conducted using principal component analysis (PCA) combined with absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) models. The results showed that agricultural activities and domestic sewage were the dominant pollution sources of surface water in the study area.

Summary: The study found that in the Weihe River Basin, there is a prominent contradiction between water supply and demand, with the water security index being influenced by factors such as agricultural water consumption and population. Different regions in the basin exhibit diverse agricultural water-use efficiency. To improve water security, it is necessary to develop water-saving agriculture, control urban water quotas, and raise awareness for water conservation among residents.

Simulation effects of clean water corridor technology on the control of non-point source pollution in the Paihe River basin, Chaohu lake

Huatai Liu et al.

Summary: Water pollution remains a serious issue in certain parts of China. The study shows that the majority of non-point source pollution load in the Paihe River basin comes from agricultural and construction land, with land use changes playing a crucial role in pollution load. The use of clean water corridor technology can effectively reduce non-point source pollution load, and a comprehensive adoption of this technology is necessary to achieve ecological environmental restoration goals.

From landscape perspective to determine joint effect of land use, soil, and topography on seasonal stream water quality in subtropical agricultural catchments

Huanyao Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between integrated landscape patterns and stream water quality in different seasons in ten Chinese subtropical catchments from 2010 to 2017. The study found that nitrogen and phosphorus levels in stream water varied significantly between the fallow season and the rice-growing season, and were influenced by different landscape configuration factors in each season. In the rainy season, stream water nitrogen and phosphorus levels were more likely to be affected by landscape composition, while in the dry fallow season, landscape configuration played a more significant role in determining nitrogen and phosphorus levels.
