Explicit consideration of fiber recruitment in vascular constitutive formulation beta functions

Xuehuan He et al.

Summary: In this article, a constitutive model that explicitly accounts for collagen fiber recruitment is presented. It uses beta functions to model the distribution of random waviness and represents fiber stresses using incomplete beta functions. A four-point dispersion model is developed to consider the orientation distribution of fibers. The model shows excellent descriptive and predictive capabilities, as demonstrated by experimental data.

A discrete approach for modeling degraded elastic fibers in aortic dissection

Malte Rolf-Pissarczyk et al.

Summary: This study proposes a constitutive model that incorporates the degradation of inter-lamellar elastic fibers and verifies its ability to capture the degradation of these fibers during aortic dissection through finite element analysis. A patient-data motivated geometry study suggests that the degradation of radially-directed elastic fibers may trigger the propagation of dissection.

Vascular Mechanobiology: Homeostasis, Adaptation, and Disease

Jay D. Humphrey et al.

Summary: Cells in the vascular wall are highly sensitive to mechanical changes. In healthy arteries, mechanical forces regulate signaling and gene expression for vessel wall remodeling, but diseases often involve maladaptive remodeling and compromised homeostatic mechanisms. Disease progression is characterized by positive feedback loops that generate mechanobiological instabilities, ultimately overriding homeostatic pathways.

Review of the Techniques Used for Investigating the Role Elastin and Collagen Play in Arterial Wall Mechanics

Alessandro Giudici et al.

Summary: The arterial wall is composed of various components such as collagen and elastin fibers, proteoglycans, Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells (VSMCs) and ground matrix, which play different roles in determining the mechanical properties of the vascular tissue. Experimental methods including microscopy imaging and mechanical testing have been used to study the mechanical role of these structural proteins, but combining these methods provides a more complete understanding of the arterial micromechanics. Advances in imaging techniques allow for dynamic imaging of samples under a pseudo-physiological condition, overcoming the limitations of using either method separately. This review aims to describe the techniques available for studying arterial wall micromechanics and to identify gaps in current research on arterial mechanics.
