Jinpeng Zhang et al.

Summary: Understanding the reactive behaviors and mechanisms of iron/cobalt-doped nickel-based oxygen carriers (OCs) is essential for chemical looping combustion (CLC) and provides insights for constructing high-performance OCs, designing reactors, and system intensification. This study investigates the reactive behaviors and mechanisms of Fe/Co-doped nickel-based OCs using multiple-scale molecular modeling and experiments. The interaction between molecules and OCs surfaces is characterized, and the reaction path and coordinates in elementary reactions are explored. The effects of Fe/Co doping on the activity of nickel-based OCs are determined through energy decomposition analysis and DFT calculations. Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and temperature-programmed H2 reduction are performed to validate the experimental and computational results. Material characterizations reveal the effects of chemical bonding, surface structure, particle size, and defects of OCs on the reactive properties.

The molecular dynamics simulation of lignite combustion process in O2/CO2 atmosphere with ReaxFF force field

Yu Qiu et al.

Summary: Pressurized oxy-fuel combustion is a complex process involving free radical collisions and reactions. In this study, the impact of operating conditions on the distribution of main fragments and the reaction mechanisms were investigated using ReaxFF reactive Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation method. The results showed that increasing pressure/density, oxygen concentration, and temperature enhanced the decomposition of coal molecular structure. The variety of initial reactions also increased with temperature. Increasing pressure promoted effective collision of molecules and facilitated attack by oxidants, leading to early chemical bond breakage and increased oxygen consumption. The dehydrogenation reaction of coal molecule and small fragments was also promoted under increased pressure/density. However, the number of fragments decreased as pressure/density continued to grow due to further decomposition or re-polymerization of small molecular benzene ring structures. The increase in oxygen concentration also facilitated ring opening and oxidation reactions, promoting coal decomposition and combustion. The findings in this study confirmed the observations from other oxy-fuel experimental work at a microscopic level.
