Biologically effective dose and prediction of obliteration of unruptured arteriovenous malformations treated by upfront Gamma Knife radiosurgery: a series of 149 consecutive cases

Constantin Tuleasca et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively evaluated the role of the biologically effective dose (BED) after Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) for brain AVMs, finding that BED was the strongest predictor of obliteration of unruptured AVMs. A radiosurgical score including the BED is proposed, with V12 appearing as a predictor for both efficacy and toxicity. Beam-on time was statistically significant for both obliteration and complication appearance.

Stereotactic Radiosurgery With Versus Without Embolization for Brain Arteriovenous Malformations

Ching-Jen Chen et al.

Summary: This study compared the outcomes of embolization and SRS, vs SRS alone for AVMs, and found that there was no significant difference in AVM obliteration rates between the two groups, but the probability of radiologic RIC was lower in the embolization and SRS cohort.

The Role of Biological Effective Dose in Predicting Obliteration After Stereotactic Radiosurgery of Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformations

Cody L. Nesvick et al.

Summary: The study showed that a biological effective dose (BED) greater than 133 Gy can predict the obliteration of cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) after single-session SRS treatment. Further research is needed to determine whether BED optimization and treatment dose should be considered in AVM SRS planning.

Recent progress understanding pathophysiology and genesis of brain AVM-a narrative review

Hans-Jakob Steiger

Summary: Considerable progress has been made in understanding the genetic nature and pathophysiology of brain AVM in recent years, especially in terms of genetic origin and advanced imaging. However, challenges still remain in modeling the flow structure within AVM compartments.

Does Variceal Drainage Affect Arteriovenous Malformation Obliteration and Hemorrhage Rates After Stereotactic Radiosurgery? A Case-Matched Analysis

Andrew Faramand et al.

Summary: This study compared the obliteration and hemorrhage risks in AVM patients with and without varices. The presence of AVM variceal venous drainage did not affect the obliteration rate and did not confer a higher risk of a subsequent hemorrhage both before and after SRS.
