Evaluation of an Extract Derived from the Seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum to Reduce the Negative Effects of Heat Stress on Broiler Growth and Stress Parameters

Gregory S. Archer

Summary: Adding seaweed extract to the feed can reduce stress in broiler chickens during prolonged heat stress events, although it does not affect growth or feed conversion. This study aimed to determine whether this extract could alleviate the negative impacts of heat stress on broiler growth. The results showed that the seaweed extract could reduce stress levels in broiler chickens under heat stress conditions.

Aloe vera: A Sustainable Green Alternative to Exclude Antibiotics in Modern Poultry Production

Rifat Ullah Khan et al.

Summary: In the past 50 years, there has been a growing global demand for poultry meat due to increased concerns for health, ecology, safety, and equity. However, organic poultry farming, particularly the use of medicinal herbs, has gained significant attention and public demand recently, mainly due to concerns about antibiotic resistance. The ban on antibiotics in the poultry industry has led to increased interest in herbs as antibiotic alternatives. Aloe vera has been shown in various research studies to have nutritional benefits for improving poultry growth, immune status, and acting as an antibacterial and anticoccidial agent.

Effects of adding nano-emulsified plant oil and probiotics to drinking water during different periods besides sex on processing characteristics, physicochemical properties, and meat quality traits of broiler chickens

Gamaleldin M. Suliman et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of nano-emulsified plant oil and probiotic as water additives on the processing characteristics, physicochemical properties, and meat quality traits of broiler chickens. The supplementation of magic oil and probiotic improved the meat chewiness of male broiler chickens, especially during the 0-30 day growing period. Further studies under commercial conditions are recommended to determine the optimal combination of magic oil and probiotic for the best processing characteristics and meat quality outcomes.

Effects of dietary betaine supplementation on growth performance, meat quality, muscle fatty acid composition and antioxidant ability in slow-growing broiler chickens

M. Yang et al.

Summary: This study showed that dietary betaine supplementation in slow-growing Xueshan chickens can improve growth performance, meat quality, muscle fatty acid composition, and antioxidant ability. Betaine supplementation led to better feed conversion efficiency, weight gain, meat color, decreased cooking and drip loss, improved muscular resilience and tenderness, and altered fatty acid composition. It also enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities and gene expression related to antioxidant markers. A recommended supplementation level of 1000 mg/kg betaine was identified for these chickens.

Essential oils and their nanoemulsions as green alternatives to antibiotics in poultry nutrition: a comprehensive review

Mohamed E. Abd El-Hack et al.

Summary: This review assesses the benefits of using essential oils (EOs) and their nanoemulsions (NEs) as antibiotic alternatives in organic poultry production. EOs, derived from plants, have antimicrobial activities and can be used for therapeutic purposes. NEs, as carrier systems, improve the bioavailability of volatile lipophilic components of EOs.

Microencapsulated essential oils combined with organic acids improves immune antioxidant capacity and intestinal barrier function as well as modulates the hindgut microbial community in piglets

Jiayu Ma et al.

Summary: The study found that dietary supplementation with microencapsulated essential oils and organic acids (MOA) improved growth performance, immune-antioxidant status, intestinal barrier function, and microbial structure in piglets. MOA decreased the rate of diarrhea, increased the concentration of certain proteins and enzymes in the blood, enhanced nutrient digestibility, up-regulated gene expression related to intestinal barrier function, and modified the microbial community structure in the gut. The results suggest that MOA could be a feasible alternative to antibiotics to improve intestinal health in piglet production.

Essential oils as growth-promoting additives on performance, nutrient digestibility, cecal microbes, and serum metabolites of broiler chickens: a meta-analysis

Agung Irawan et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis showed that adding dietary essential oils (EOs) in broiler chicken feed can enhance growth performance, improve nutrient digestibility, and have positive effects on serum metabolites. Compared to antibiotics, EOs were more effective in reducing FCR and increasing BWG. Cinnamaldehydecompound showed potential in increasing carcass weight and serum metabolites, while carvacrol-based compound decreased E. coli population. Overall, EOs are a promising alternative to antibiotics as growth promoters in broiler production.
