A self-driven fuel cell to recycle (NH4)2SO4 fertilizer and energy from desulfurization solution

Jucai Wei et al.

Summary: This paper presents the development of an (NH4)(2)SO3/air fuel cell for energy recovery and production of (NH4)(2)SO4 fertilizer from ammonium desulfurization solution. The fuel cell operates using the desulfurization solution as fuel and air as the electron acceptor. The electrooxidation mechanisms and dynamic parameters of sulfite and sulfate on a PtPd2.75/C catalyst are investigated, and a laboratory-scale fuel cell with three chambers is fabricated and simulated successfully. The fuel cell exhibits promising performance in terms of open cell voltage, discharge current density, and power density, making it a potential method for recycling energy and matter from environmental pollutants.

Electrochemical advanced oxidation process with simultaneous persulfate and hydrogen peroxide on-site generations for high salinity wastewater

Jucai Wei et al.

Summary: Organic contaminant abatement by upgraded electrochemical process is highly efficient. An electrochemical advanced oxidation process is developed by combining in situ electro-generation of persulfate on beta-PbO2 anode and hydrogen peroxide on carbon cathode. The presence of reactive species, such as 1O2, ·OH, and SO4·-, produced on-site contributes to the strong oxidant power and mineralization. The application of oxygen-depolarized electrode not only produces hydrogen peroxide but also reduces cell voltage and energy consumption.

Enabling direct H2O2 electrosynthesis of 100 % selectivity at 100 mA cm-2 using a continuous flow sulfite/air fuel cell

Jucai Wei et al.

Summary: The direct electrosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide from the air is a promising alternative to the energy-intensive anthraquinone process. However, current methods suffer from low productivity and high energy consumption. In this study, a continuous flow sulfite/air fuel cell with a sulfite depolarized anode is proposed as a direct synthesis strategy. By optimizing catalysts and cell parameters, the prototype cell achieved high selectivity and productivity, with low energy consumption. The desulfurization solution from the flue gas desulfurization process is applied as the anolyte, further enhancing hydrogen peroxide synthesis and recovering sulfur as fertilizer.

Jucai Wei et al.

Summary: This study successfully synthesized bifunctional Pd-Pt bimetallic catalysts for a sulfite/air fuel cell via a simple ethylene glycol reduction method. Characterization of the catalysts revealed that the diameter of Pt-Pd bimetals was around 3-6 nm, and the mechanisms of sulfite oxidation and oxygen reduction were investigated. PtPd2.75/C was identified as a promising bifunctional catalyst for the sulfite/air fuel cell, showing excellent electrochemical activity and long-term stability.
