An integrative agent-based vertical evacuation risk assessment model for near-field tsunami hazards

Chen Chen et al.

Summary: This study combines FN-curves with Agent-based Modeling and Simulation (ABMS) to evaluate the risk of tsunamis with different recurrence intervals. The results show that placing Vertical Evacuation Structures (VES) near shorelines can save nearby at-risk populations, but it also increases certain risks. The study also finds that placing VES near the centroid of a population can reduce mortality rate, and spreading out VES based on community topography can further lower the mortality rate. This approach can help local authorities and engineers determine tailored adaptive measures and evacuation strategies to avoid maladaptive actions.

On capturing human agency and methodological interdisciplinarity in socio-hydrology research

David J. Yu et al.

Summary: Socio-hydrology has expanded the knowledge of the hydrological community by incorporating ideas and approaches from other scientific disciplines, particularly social sciences. However, there is still much to explore in terms of capturing human agency and combining different methods and disciplinary views from both hydrological and social sciences. This paper, based on the Special Issue Advancing Socio-hydrology published in this journal from 2019 to 2022, highlights the importance of understanding the multi-level nature of human decision making and applying an interdisciplinary multi-method approach to enhance the understanding of coupled human-water systems.

Impact of urbanization on precipitation and temperature over a lake-marsh wetland: A case study in Xiong'an New Area, China

Huidong Su et al.

Summary: The urbanization of Xiong'an New Area has significantly impacted the local climate, increasing precipitation and slightly raising temperatures, especially during heavy rainfall events, which has increased the risk of urban flooding and emphasized the need for improved drainage infrastructure. The urbanization process has also led to different temperature and precipitation responses within and outside the lake area, highlighting the complex interactions between urbanization, wetlands, and climate in the region.

Ario Muhammad et al.

Summary: Developing an integrated tsunami evacuation approach is crucial for disaster risk reduction in coastal regions. The study compared a simplified evacuation approach with two more rigorous agent-based modeling approaches, revealing that the latter is more effective in capturing the uncertainty of future tsunami risk and saving lives. The results highlight the importance of considering uncertainties and dynamic safe areas in developing tsunami evacuation plans.

Evacuation under flooded conditions: Experimental investigation of the influence of water depth on walking behaviors

Charitha Dias et al.

Summary: Flooding is a common natural disaster that poses a significant threat to people's safety, making evacuation planning crucial. However, there is a lack of data and studies on walking behaviors under different water depths. Experimental findings show that walking speeds decrease with greater water depths, with males having a higher average speed than females. In water, step frequency is lower but lateral movement amplitude is higher compared to normal walking conditions.

Summary: Satellite imagery from 2000 to 2018 indicates that the proportion of global population exposed to floods is increasing, highlighting the importance of investing in flood adaptation strategies to reduce loss of life and livelihood. Changes in where and how floods occur, as well as the population exposed, are being influenced by urbanization, flood mitigation infrastructure, and settlements in floodplains. The high spatial and temporal resolution of satellite observations will enhance understanding of flood changes and adaptation methods.

A novel agent-based model for tsunami evacuation simulation and risk assessment

Summary: Tsunami evacuation is crucial for saving lives, and realistic simulation models are essential for accurate risk assessment and planning. Agent-based modeling is ideal for capturing emergent phenomena and individual-level interactions in tsunami evacuation, but existing models often oversimplify important factors. To address these limitations, a novel agent-based tsunami evacuation model is proposed to explicitly model uncertainties and consider multi-modal evacuation with pedestrian-vehicle interactions.
