Serum Uric Acid Levels and Nephrosclerosis in a Population-Based Autopsy Study: The Hisayama Study

Kenji Maki et al.

Summary: Higher serum uric acid (SUA) levels were significantly associated with advanced glomerular sclerosis and advanced kidney arteriosclerosis, but not with advanced arteriolar hyalinosis.

Urate-lowering therapy for CKD patients with asymptomatic hyperuricemia without proteinuria elucidated by attribute-based research in the FEATHER Study

Hiroshi Kataoka et al.

Summary: Attribute-based medicine is important for patient-centered medicine. In this study, the efficacy of febuxostat in CKD patients was evaluated using a cross-classification, attribute-based research approach. The results showed that febuxostat treatment significantly improved eGFR slope in patients without proteinuria and in patients with both proteinuria and high serum creatinine levels.

A cross-sectional study of 502 patients found a diffuse hyperechoic kidney medulla pattern in patients with severe gout

Thomas Bardin et al.

Summary: In Vietnamese patients with tophaceous gout, a high frequency of hyperechoic kidney medulla was observed, which was closely associated with disease duration, clinical tophi, and joint pathologies. These findings may serve as important targets for urate-lowering therapy.

Does gouty nephropathy exist, and is it more common than we think?

Federica Piani et al.

Summary: Gout is common in patients with CKD, and those with kidney dysfunction may have hyperechoic medullas, potentially linked to increased risk of hypertension and kidney dysfunction. More research is needed to validate these findings.
