Chiral binol-[4]helicene hybrids: Strong solid-state organic emitters with aggregation-enhanced emission and chiroptical properties

Chunfang Liu et al.

Summary: Chiral organic fluorescent materials with helicene moiety derived from binaphthanol structure exhibited excellent chiroptical performance. These compounds demonstrated aggregation-enhanced emission properties and strong blue emission in solid state. The twisted molecular structures of these compounds limited the stacking of adjacent molecules in solid state, resulting in their excellent fluorescent properties.

Helical thienothiophene (TT) and benzothieno-benzothiophene (BTBT) derivatives: synthesis, structural characterization and semiconducting properties

Maurizio Mastropasqua Talamo et al.

Summary: Thienothiophene and benzothieno-benzothiophene units were successfully incorporated into helicene derivatives, leading to the synthesis of helicenic compounds with side alkyl chains. The solid state structures of the compounds displayed alternating stacking for the mono-helicene enantiomers and homochiral sheets for the bis-helicene enantiomers. The materials showed semiconductor behavior in organic field-effect transistor (OFET) devices, with the bis-helicene derivative exhibiting a predicted hole mobility in close agreement with experimental measurements.

Turn-on green fluorescence imaging for latent fingerprint applications

Rui Tian et al.

Summary: In this study, an efficient green fluorescent probe PVPOH was designed and synthesized to illuminate latent fingerprints. PVPOH exhibited minimal fluorescence in aqueous solution but strong green fluorescence emission upon binding to the lipophilic vicinity of a latent fingerprint surface. The developed images of latent fingerprints showed high fidelity and contrast, with the green fluorescence being highly visible to the human eye. PVPOH's aqueous solution is environmentally friendly, making it suitable for on-site fingerprint collection.

Imaging deposition-dependent supramolecular chiral organisation

C. Elizabeth Killalea et al.

Summary: In this study, thin films of a chiral diketopyrrolopyrrole derivative were examined using spatially-defined Mueller Matrix Polarimetry, with a focus on the Circular Dichroism signal. The impact of deposition techniques and thermal annealing on chiral supramolecular structures in the solid state was investigated. It was found that spun-coated films showed homogeneity, while drop-coating resulted in chiroptical diversity in the material, a feature that cannot be observed using absorption spectroscopy or optical microscopy.

Quantifying the Overall Efficiency of Circularly Polarized Emitters

Lorenzo Arrico et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new concept of CPL brightness (B-CPL), which takes into consideration the absorption extinction coefficient and quantum yield in addition to the g(lum) factor, to comprehensively evaluate the efficiency of CPL emitters. By calculating B-CPL values for over 180 compounds and analyzing the data distribution for main classes of CPL molecular emitters, this tool can aid in contextualizing new CPL active compounds and guiding the selection of molecular systems for specific CPL applications.

Tunable Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Single Crystal and Powder of the Simplest Tetraphenylethylene Helicate

Ming Hu et al.

Summary: Tetraphenylethylene (TPE) single crystals exhibit strong circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with a high g lum value up to 0.53, and the sense and magnitude of CPL signals can be actively tuned by simply rotating the single crystal. Mixing other luminescent dyes with TPE powder in KBr pellets can induce full-color CPL emission through radiative energy transfer, offering a simple method for CPL emission tuning.

Straightforward N-alkylation of diketopyrrolopyrroles through the Mitsunobu reaction with benzyl, α-branched, and chiral alcohols

Maurizio Mastropasqua Talamo et al.

Summary: The N-alkylation of Diketopyrrolopyrroles (DPPs) in this study, achieved through the Mitsunobu reaction, has replaced the commonly used nucleophilic substitution in halogenated derivatives. This has resulted in the production of unprecedented DPPs with alpha-branched and chiral chains, ensuring solubility and further processability.
