Measurement of the 2S1/2-8D5/2 Transition in Hydrogen

A. D. Brandt et al.

Summary: In this study, we measured the hydrogen 2S(1/2) - 8D(5/2) transition using a cryogenic atomic beam. The resonance frequency and the derived proton radius and Rydberg constant showed significant disagreement with the CODATA recommended value.

The proton charge radius

H. Gao et al.

Summary: This review examines the latest situation concerning the proton charge radius, with particular focus on electron-scattering measurements. The importance of accurate knowledge about the proton charge radius for understanding quantum chromodynamics and bound state quantum electrodynamics calculations is discussed, along with the theoretical backgrounds and recent developments in determining the proton charge radius using different experimental techniques. Upcoming experiments and the puzzle of the deuteron charge radius are also mentioned.

Measurement of a helium tune-out frequency: an independent test of quantum electrodynamics

B. M. Henson et al.

Summary: Despite being extensively tested, recent atomic spectroscopy measurements have revealed small discrepancies between experiment and theory in quantum electrodynamics (QED). This study focuses on the tune-out frequency of helium and compares experimental results with new theoretical QED calculations, resolving both QED contributions and retardation corrections.

Fano-like Resonance due to Interference with Distant Transitions

Y. -N Lv et al.

Summary: In this study, a mechanism of Fano-like resonance induced by distant discrete levels is proposed and experimentally verified with Doppler-free spectroscopy of CO2. The observed spectrum exhibits an asymmetric profile, and its amplitude increases quadratically with the probe laser power. These findings have significant implications for research based on narrow transitions.

Measuring the α-particle charge radius with muonic helium-4 ions

Julian J. Krauth et al.

Summary: The energy levels of hydrogen-like atomic systems can be calculated with great precision, which can be used to study nuclear structure. Through measuring the root-mean-square charge radius of the proton and comparing it with the value from electron scattering, it provides a benchmark for few-nucleon theories, lattice quantum chromodynamics, and electron scattering. The agreement also constrains several beyond-standard-model theories proposed to explain the proton-radius puzzle, establishing spectroscopy of light muonic atoms and ions as a precise tool for studies of nuclear properties.

Improved active fiber-based retroreflector with intensity stabilization and a polarization monitor for the near UV

Vitaly Wirthl et al.

Summary: The study introduces an improved active fiber-based retroreflector for high-quality wavefront-retracing anti-parallel laser beams in the near UV, with applications in precision spectroscopy of atomic hydrogen. Weak aberrations produced by the fiber collimator can be characterized through caustic measurement and limit the performance of the AFR, with implications for systems requiring collimated high-quality laser beams. Additionally, advancements in collimator design, alignment, and control have been made to stabilize the intensity of the wavefront-retracing beams and monitor polarization.

CODATA recommended values of the fundamental physical constants: 2018

Eite Tiesinga et al.

Summary: The self-consistent values of physics and chemistry constants recommended by CODATA for 2018 are reported, with discussions on major improvements and inconsistencies. Many constants have reduced uncertainties or exact values due to the transition to the revised SI. However, inconsistencies remain for the gravitational constant and the muon magnetic-moment anomaly.
