Atomically precise metal chalcogenide supertetrahedral clusters: frameworks to molecules, and structure to function

Jiaxu Zhang et al.

Summary: Metal chalcogenide supertetrahedral clusters (MCSCs) are of great significance for the development of crystalline porous framework materials and atomically precise cluster chemistry. They have attracted research interest in their synthetic and structural chemistry, as well as their applications in different fields. MCSCs have similar properties to semiconductor nanocrystals but avoid their drawbacks, making them suitable for various applications. This review provides a comprehensive overview of three decades of research on MCSCs and highlights their potential in future studies.

Ligand-partially-protected metal-chalcogenide supertetrahedral clusters

Jin Wu et al.

Summary: The types and quantities of surface ligands used in the synthesis of nanomaterials play a dominant role in determining their physical and chemical properties. This study proposed a facile synthetic strategy to create ligand-partially-protected metal-chalcogenide supertetrahedral clusters (MCSCs) through the cleavage of disulfide bonds in organic ligands.

Ionothermal Access to Defined Oligomers of Supertetrahedral Selenido Germanate Clusters

Zhou Wu et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the formation of finite cluster oligomers with supertetrahedral architectures through ionothermal syntheses, successfully generating unprecedented dimers and tetramers of the [Ge4Se10](4-) anion. These oligomers exhibit lower average negative charges, reducing electrostatic interactions and allowing the salts to dissolve readily in common solvents.

Weak Interaction-Tailored Catalytic Interface of Ultrasmall Gold Nanoclusters as Enzyme Mimics for Enhanced Colorimetric Biosensing

Fangying Sun et al.

Summary: Through tailored catalytic interfaces via small molecule-mediated weak interactions, the peroxidase-mimic activity of gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) can be significantly enhanced. The small molecule 1-methyl-2-imidazolecarboxaldehyde (MCA) was found to have the most significant effect on enhancing the catalytic activity of glutathione-stabilized AuNCs among all the molecules tested. The presence of MCA promotes the production of center dot OH in the GSH-AuNC system, leading to improved bioanalytical performance of AuNC-based peroxidase mimics.

Yamin Nie et al.

Summary: This study introduces PEDOT as a functional ligand for NCs, which plays a role in stabilization, electrical conductivity, and electrocatalytic activity, leading to the preparation of high ECL efficiency NCs. The PEDOT-hosted Ag NCs show unprecedented ECL intensity, paving the way for potential applications in light-emitting devices and clinical biosensing, as demonstrated by sensitive detection of dopamine.

0D/1D heterostructure for efficient electrocatalytic CO2-to-C1 conversion by ultra-small cluster-based multi-metallic sulfide nanoparticles and MWCNTs

Xiang Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel 0D/1D heterostructure catalyst was successfully fabricated by electrostatic self-assembly of multi-metallic sulfide supertetrahedral NCs-based nanoparticles with multi-walled carbon nanotubes, exhibiting high efficiency, excellent TOF, and good stability for CO2 electroreduction. The synergistic effects of co-existed Ga and In ions and enhanced interfacial charge-transfer were found to be responsible for the promoted CO2 electroreduction activity.

Highly Soluble Supertetrahedra upon Selective Partial Butylation of Chalcogenido Metalate Clusters in Ionic Liquids

Bertram Peters et al.

Summary: Two generally different types of supertetrahedral clusters have been identified: one with an organic ligand shell, low charges, and high solubility, while the other type is ligand-free, with high charges and low solubility. By synthesizing and fully characterizing two salts with a minimal number of organic substituents, high solubility in CH2Cl2 or CH3CN was achieved, indicating nearly unaffected band gaps in the optical absorption properties. These findings were rationalized and explained through high-level quantum chemical studies.

Unveiling the impurity-modulated photoluminescence from Mn2+-containing metal chalcogenide semiconductors via Fe2+ doping

Zhiqiang Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a Mn2+-containing chalcogenide semiconductor nanocluster model was used as a host to investigate the modulation of photoluminescence by Fe2+ impurity. The results showed a significant decrease in Mn2+-related emission properties with the introduction of Fe2+ impurities, indicating the nonradiative nature of the Fe2+-impurity energy acceptor center. The study provides insight into the modulation mechanism of Mn2+-related photoluminescence affected by impurity incorporation.
