Hierarchical architectures of ZSM-5 with controllable mesoporous and their particular adsorption/desorption performance for VOCs

Cheng Zhao et al.

Summary: By hydrothermally synthesizing spherical and hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite with organo-functionalized silica and organic additive, nanocrystalline stacking and hierarchical meso-microporous architectures were achieved. The size of nanocrystals and surface topography of ZSM-5 were influenced by the organo-functionalized silica and organic additive, allowing control of the mesoporous volumes and pore diameter. Evaluation of performance in toluene showed high adsorption ability and excellent cyclic performance due to lower steric limitations and higher diffusion rate for organic molecules. Exploration using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Differential Thermogravimetric Analysis directly confirmed the presence of organosilane and organic additives in the zeolitic nanocrystals, leading to the proposal of a crystallization mechanism significant for designing and synthesizing hierarchical zeolites.
