Photon spin angular momentum driven magnetization dynamics in ferromagnet/heavy metal bilayers

Satoshi Iihama et al.

Summary: A recent study reports the control of thin-film magnetization using optical helicity. It was found that stochastic thermal processes, such as magnetic circular dichroism, mediate helicity-dependent magnetization switching, while the photon spin angular momentum plays a secondary role. However, the inverse Faraday effect in ferromagnetic thin films and photon spin angular momentum injection into heavy metal thin films can induce torque on metallic thin-film magnets. This study explores the photon spin angular momentum driven magnetization dynamics in metallic thin-film heterostructures and provides insights for efficient photon-driven magnetization manipulation.

Laser-induced terahertz spin transport in magnetic nanostructures arises from the same force as ultrafast demagnetization

Reza Rouzegar et al.

Summary: Laser-induced terahertz spin transport and ultrafast demagnetization are two important phenomena in femtomagnetism and terahertz spintronics. This study found that the rate of ultrafast demagnetization in a ferromagnetic metal film and the time evolution of terahertz spin transport from the film to an adjacent normal-metal layer exhibit the same pattern. This suggests that both phenomena are driven by the same force determined by the state of the ferromagnet.

Probing optically induced spin currents using terahertz spin waves in noncollinear magnetic bilayers

Tom Lichtenberg et al.

Summary: This study investigates optically-induced spin currents using the excitation of THz spin-waves in noncollinear bilayer structures. The measurements show a correlation between the spin-wave phase and laser fluence, which can be explained by assuming the spin current is proportional to the time derivative of the magnetization. The results, supported by theoretical calculations and micromagnetic simulations, suggest that angular momentum transfer via the s-d interaction and ballistic interlayer transport are sufficient to explain spin-current generation and transport. Additionally, it is found that the damping-like optical spin transfer torque dominates THz spin-wave generation, indicating a shared microscopic origin for laser-induced demagnetization and spin-current generation.

Interface-induced field-like optical spin torque in a ferromagnet/heavy metal heterostructure

Satoshi Iihama et al.

Summary: The study found that the in-plane field-like optical spin torque in ferromagnet/nonmagnetic heavy metal heterostructures significantly increased with decreasing ferromagnetic layer thicknesses. This interfacial field-like optical spin torque was explained by the optical Rashba-Edelstein effect caused by the structural inversion symmetry breaking.

Acoustic spin Hall effect in strong spin-orbit metals

Takuya Kawada et al.

Summary: The observation of the acoustic spin Hall effect shows that spin current can be induced by lattice motion through spin-orbit interaction. The results demonstrate the strong coupling of electron spins with rotating lattices via the SOI, highlighting the potential of lattice dynamics to supply spin current in strong spin-orbit metals. The spin current in nonmagnetic metals scales with the SOI and the time derivative of the lattice displacement, leading to a field-dependent acoustic voltage in NM/ferromagnetic metal bilayers.

Interface-enhanced helicity dependent photocurrent in metal/semimetal bilayers

Hana Hirose et al.

Summary: The appearance of helicity dependent photocurrent (HDP) in metal/semimetal bilayers is investigated, showing that the sign of HDP reverses under back illumination compared to front illumination. This reversal is attributed to spin absorption and spin to charge conversion at the interface. Interface effects play a significant role in enhancing HDP under front illumination for bilayers with thin Bi layers, suggesting a potential use of HDP for assessing interface states with strong spin orbit coupling.
