Automatic assessment of human gastric motility and emptying from dynamic 3D magnetic resonance imaging

Kun-Han Lu et al.

Summary: Time-sequenced MRI is a valuable technique for assessing gastric emptying and motility, but there is a lack of automated image processing pipelines for 4D MRI data. This study developed an automated pipeline for analyzing dynamic 3D gastric MRI data and found that gastric emptying follows a linear-exponential pattern, while gastric motility exhibits peristaltic patterns with stronger contractile amplitude in the antrum compared to the corpus.

Functional Dyspepsia and Gastroparesis in Tertiary Care are Interchangeable Syndromes With Common Clinical and Pathologic Features

Pankaj J. Pasricha et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with functional dyspepsia (FD) and gastroparesis were indistinguishable in terms of clinical and pathologic features or gastric emptying assessment in a tertiary referral setting. Gastric-emptying results were unreliable in capturing the pathophysiology of clinical symptoms in either condition, suggesting that FD and gastroparesis should be considered as part of the same spectrum of gastric neuromuscular disorders.

Non-uniform gastric wall kinematics revealed by 4D Cine magnetic resonance imaging in humans

Roberta Sclocco et al.

Summary: Assessment of gastric function in humans has traditionally relied on invasive methods that evaluate single aspects of gastric function. A non-invasive approach using dynamic MRI has shown promise in simultaneously assessing multiple aspects of gastric function in healthy subjects. MRI may serve as an important clinical tool for evaluating impaired gastric function.
