Atypical prediction error learning is associated with prodromal symptoms in individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis

Colleen E. Charlton et al.

Summary: This study confirms the reductions in auditory mismatch negativity (MMN) in schizophrenia and proposes the predictive coding theory to explain this phenomenon. The results demonstrate the correlation between increased sensory precision-weighted prediction errors (pwPEs) and higher-level belief uncertainty with the occurrence of auditory MMN. Moreover, the severity of prodromal positive symptoms is associated with the expression of sensory pwPEs and higher-level belief uncertainty. These findings highlight the importance of computational models in understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms of psychosis.

Theta Phase Synchrony Is Sensitive to Corollary Discharge Abnormalities in Early Illness Schizophrenia but Not in the Psychosis Risk Syndrome

Brian J. Roach et al.

Summary: The study found that suppression of theta phase coherence during vocalization is a more sensitive index of corollary discharge-mediated auditory cortical suppression than N1 suppression, and has a greater impact on schizophrenia patients. Meanwhile, suppression of theta power did not differentiate between groups.

40-Hz Auditory Steady-State Responses Characterize Circuit Dysfunctions and Predict Clinical Outcomes in Clinical High-Risk for Psychosis Participants: A Magnetoencephalography Study

Tineke Grent-'t-Jong et al.

Summary: This study found deficits in 40-Hz auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) in participants at clinical high-risk for psychosis (CHR-P) and patients with first-episode psychosis, especially in the right thalamus and hippocampus. The impairments in 40-Hz ASSRs were more pronounced in CHR-P participants who later transitioned to psychosis or showed persistent attenuated psychotic symptoms (APSs).

Neurocognitive Functioning in Individuals at Clinical High Risk for Psychosis A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Ana Catalan et al.

Summary: Neurocognitive functioning is a potential biomarker in individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis. The study found medium to large deficits in neurocognitive functioning in CHR-P individuals compared to healthy controls, and less impairment compared to individuals with first-episode psychosis. Meta-regressions identified age and education as significant factors affecting processing speed.

Probability of Transition to Psychosis in Individuals at Clinical High Risk An Updated Meta-analysis

Gonzalo Salazar de Pablo et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively analyzed the risk of transitioning from CHR-P individuals to psychosis, finding that the transition risk continues to increase in both short and long terms. Lower proportion of female individuals and higher frequency of brief psychotic symptoms were associated with increased transition risk.
