Enhanced out-of-plane piezoelectricity and carrier mobility in Janus γ- Sn2XY ( X/Y= S, Se, Te) monolayers: A first-principles prediction

Tuan V. Vu et al.

Summary: In this study, we designed Janus gamma- Sn2XY (XY= S, Se, Te) monolayers and predicted their piezoelectricity and carrier mobility using first-principles simulations. We found that Janus gamma- Sn2XY have indirect semiconducting characteristics with a camel's back-like dispersion in the top valence band. It was discovered that Janus gamma- Sn2XY are piezoelectric with high out-of-plane piezoelectric coefficients. Our calculations also revealed high electron mobility in the Janus gamma- Sn2XY monolayers, especially in gamma-Sn2STe, which exceeds 10(5) cm(2) V-1 s(-1).

Large and anisotropic carrier mobility in monolayers of the MA2Z4 series (M = Cr, Mo, W; A = Si, Ge; and Z = N, P)

Achintya Priydarshi et al.

Summary: The recent discovery of synthetic two-dimensional materials has offered new possibilities for investigating unique transport and optical properties. In this study, we thoroughly examined the acoustic phonon limited intrinsic carrier mobility in monolayers of the MA(2)Z(4) series (M = Cr, Mo, W; A = Si, Ge; and Z = N, P). Our findings reveal that most of the monolayers are semiconducting, with only two of them being metallic. Moreover, we demonstrated that strain engineering can significantly modify the electronic band structure and carrier mobility in these materials.

Mosayeb Naseri et al.

Summary: Considering the global population growth, energy requirements, industrialization, and the urgent issue of global warming, the search for new clean energy resources is essential for the sustainable development of civilization. This paper predicts two novel two-dimensional (2D) monolayer materials, named 2D XSnS3 (X = Ga, In) monolayers, as promising candidates for water-splitting applications through first principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). The stability, electrical, and optical properties of these materials are assessed, showing that they are semiconductors with moderate band gaps, good absorption in the visible region, and the potential for functional adjustment through strain. Moreover, the 2D InSnS3 monolayer is found to be a promising material for water splitting based on the computed absolute band edge positions and Gibbs' free energy for hydrogen adsorption.
