Actuation of Liquid Crystalline Elastomers at or Below Ambient Temperature

Grant E. Bauman et al.

Summary: Liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) are emerging material actuators that undergo macroscopic dimensional changes when stimulated. In this study, LCE is prepared using thiol-Michael/thiol-ene reactions, enabling actuation at or below ambient temperature. The alignment of LCE is achieved through mechanical alignment and 3D printing, allowing for high strain and tunable thermotropic response.

Light-triggered autonomous shape-reconfigurable and locomotive rechargeable power sources

Kwon-Hyung Lee et al.

Summary: Soft electronics have attracted considerable attention as a promising alternative to conventional electronics. In this study, light-triggered autonomous shape-reconfigurable and locomotive rechargeable power sources were developed, integrating quasi-solid-state supercapacitors with thermoresponsive liquid crystalline polymer networks. These power sources exhibited autonomous and reversible shape-morphing upon exposure to light or heat, while maintaining their electrochemical performance. The potential viability of these power sources as untethered soft robotic power sources was demonstrated.

Three-Dimensional Electrochromic Soft Photonic Crystals Based on MXene-Integrated Blue Phase Liquid Crystals for Bioinspired Visible and Infrared Camouflage

Xuan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel method for fabricating camouflage materials that can adaptively change color in the visible and infrared regions was reported. The materials were made by growing photopolymerizable liquid crystals onto highly aligned MXene nanostructured thin films. The resulting materials exhibited vivid structural colors and reversible switching between bright colored and dark black states under a low electric field. Pixelated devices that allow for pixel-controllable electrochromism were demonstrated, as well as a free-standing electrochromic flexible film that achieved visible electrochromism and thermal camouflage.

Self-regulating electrical rhythms with liquid crystal oligomer networks in hybrid circuitry

Mert O. Astam et al.

Summary: In this study, a self-regulated oscillator is designed using the reversible actuating properties of liquid crystal oligomer network (LCON) polymers. By utilizing a thermally-responsive and electrically-functionalized LCON film as a dual-action component, dynamic equilibrium is achieved. The hybrid circuit configuration generates a self-regulated feedback loop that cycles regularly and indefinitely, and the cycle frequency can be adjusted by altering multiple factors.

Photo-Triggered Shape Reconfiguration in Stretchable Reduced Graphene Oxide-Patterned Azobenzene-Functionalized Liquid Crystalline Polymer Networks

Woongbi Cho et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a novel approach by integrating azobenzene-functionalized liquid crystalline polymer networks with patterned reduced graphene oxide to achieve on-demand shape reconfiguration in response to external stimuli, while exhibiting highly enhanced mechanical and electrical properties. The spatial patterning of reduced graphene oxide allows insulating azo-LCNs to be converted into electrically conducting structures, overcoming the typical trade-off relationship between elastic modulus and deformability. Additionally, an on-demand contactless shape reconfiguration in azo-LCN/rGO by UV irradiation in conjunction with passive mechanical strain is successfully demonstrated.

Metric mechanics with nontrivial topology: Actuating irises, cylinders, and evertors

D. Duffy et al.

Summary: Liquid crystal elastomers have great potential as actuators and artificial muscles, with the ability to contract and recover based on heating and cooling. By programing flat sheets with spatially varying director patterns, they can actuate into curved surfaces and perform as strong machines like grabbers or lifters. The study explores the actuation of programmed annular sheets, uncovering new modes of actuation like cylinders, irises, and everted surfaces, and confirming the designs through experiments and numerics. Many actuators designed can reattain their initial inner or outer radius after actuation, making them promising for avoiding potential stresses in their activated state.
