Assessing the association between breastfeeding, type of childbirth and family structure with childhood obesity: results from an observational study among 10-12 years old children

Aikaterini Kanellopoulou et al.

Summary: This study found associations between higher rates of breastfeeding with type of childbirth, high maternal educational level, and nuclear family structure; no significant link was observed between childhood obesity and type of childbirth or family structure; although breastfeeding has short-term benefits for childhood obesity, no significant long-term effects on adolescent obesity were identified.

Relationship between caesarean section delivery and risk of overweight/obesity among children aged 6-23 months in the Tamale Metropolis of Ghana

Issahaku Sulley et al.

Summary: There is a positive association between caesarean section (CS) delivery and the risk of childhood overweight/obesity. Children born through CS have a higher likelihood of being overweight or obese compared to those delivered vaginally. This association is attenuated after adjusting for macrosomia. This study has important implications for informing clinicians and expectant mothers in considering the mode of delivery.

Trends and projections of caesarean section rates: global and regional estimates

Ana Pilar Betran et al.

Summary: The global cesarean section rate has been steadily increasing since 1990, with projections showing continued rise by 2030. Southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa are expected to face a complex scenario involving unmet need, overuse, resource drainage, and avoidable morbidity and mortality. Comprehensive action is needed to address this global priority in order to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.

Caesarean delivery increases the risk of overweight or obesity in 2-year-old children

Cuneyt Ardic et al.

Summary: This prospective cohort study revealed a significantly increased risk of overweight or obesity in 2-year-old children born via Caesarean delivery. In comparison to vaginal delivery, Caesarean section was associated with a higher risk of childhood overweight or obesity, even after multivariate adjustment. Further research is needed to investigate the exact reasons behind this association.
