Preparation of amphiphilic copolymers via base-catalyzed hydrolysis of quaternized poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]

Vladislav Y. Shevtsov et al.

Summary: The multi-stimuli-responsiveness of tertiary amine-containing polyacrylates makes them highly attractive for use in a wide range of applications. The quaternization of PDMAEMA has been widely established due to its effective antibacterial activity. However, information about the hydrolysis of qPDMAEMA has been lacking. In this study, well-defined PDMAEMA was prepared and partially or completely quaternized. The hydrolysis of qPDMAEMA was studied, showing that it can be easily hydrolyzed in an alkaline solution, providing an alternative way of preparing PMAA with precise control.

Measurement and Modeling of Methyl Acrylate Radical Polymerization in Polar and Nonpolar Solvents

Maryam Agboluaje et al.

Summary: The influence of hydrogen bonding on the radical polymerization kinetics of methyl acrylate was studied through experimental and modeling approaches. The results showed that the rate of monomer conversion was faster in polar solvents and the molar mass of the polymer was higher in deuterated solvents. A mechanistic model was developed to describe the experimental results, taking into account factors such as acrylate backbiting, solvent viscosity, and initiator efficiency. This systematic approach provides insights into the influence of monomer content and solvent composition on acrylate polymerizations in polar media.

Effect of Ionization on Aqueous Phase Radical Copolymerization of Acrylic Acid and Cationic Monomers

Ikenna H. Ezenwajiaku et al.

Summary: The study investigates the synthesis of polyampholytes by radical copolymerization of cationic and anionic monomers in aqueous solutions, tracking monomer conversions and relative consumption rates using in situ NMR. The data suggests that the reactivity of TMAEMC is higher than MAPTAC, with both cationic monomers preferentially incorporated into the copolymersrelative to nonionized acrylic acid (AA) and fully ionized acrylic acid (NaA). The increased relative incorporation rate of the cationic comonomers when copolymerized with NaA compared to AA is attributed to electrostatic repulsion and favored cross-propagation steps between oppositely charged species.

PLP-SEC Investigation of the Influence of Electrostatic Interactions on the Radical Propagation Rate Coefficients of Cationic Monomers TMAEMC and MAPTAC

Anna Urbanova et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigates the influence of counterions on the propagation mechanism in radical polymerization of ionized monomers. It was found that repulsive electrostatic interactions between polymer chain and reacting monomers dominate at low counterion concentrations, leading to a linear increase in propagation rate coefficients with increasing counterion concentrations. Additionally, hydration of the polyelectrolyte chain and differences in behavior between cationic monomers further contribute to variations in propagation rate coefficients.

The influences of monomer structure and solvent on the radical copolymerization of tertiary amine and PEGylated methacrylates

Priscila Quinonez-Angulo et al.

Summary: Tertiary Amine Methacrylates (TAMAs) and PEGylated (macro)monomers are commonly used in the synthesis of stimuli-responsive and biocompatible materials. Shorter PEG side chains lead to faster copolymerization rates, with DEAEMA showing higher copolymerization activity compared to DMAEMA systems.
