New Model for Quantifying the Nanoparticle Concentration Using SERS Supported by Multimodal Mass Spectrometry

Aristea Anna Leventi et al.

Summary: Researchers developed a new quantitation model to calibrate the SERS response against the absolute concentration of SERS nanotags using spICP-MS, and demonstrated a homogeneous distribution and linear response of the nanotags in gelatin standards using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometry imaging. This novel calibration model shows the potential for quantitative SERS imaging, allowing correlation of nanoparticle concentration to biological responses for better understanding of disease models.

Chorioallantoic membrane tumor models highlight the effects of cisplatin compounds in oral carcinoma treatment

Patrizia Sarogni et al.

Summary: The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) recommends the use of chemotherapy for the treatment of oral carcinoma, depending on the cancer stage. Platinum compounds are commonly used drugs of choice. This study assesses and compares the performance of cisplatin alone and contained in biodegradable nanocapsules on CAM tumor models, showing antitumor and anti-angiogenic activities and deregulation of pivotal genes related to treatment resistance and tumor aggressiveness. The use of CAM tumor models is further supported as significant in understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in tumor treatment response in oncology research.

A nanoengineered topical transmucosal cisplatin delivery system induces anti-tumor response in animal models and patients with oral cancer

Manijeh Goldberg et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the use of PRV111, a nanotechnology-based system for local delivery of cisplatin, in animal models of oral cancer and in a clinical trial with OCSCC patients. The results show that PRV111 leads to increased cisplatin retention in tumors and avoids systemic toxicity. It also produces robust anti-tumor responses and complete regression of premalignant lesions. The clinical trial demonstrates efficacy and safety, with significant tumor reduction and no serious adverse events reported.

Cisplatin-conjugated gold nanoparticles-based drug delivery system for targeting hepatic tumors

Eman I. Hassanen et al.

Summary: The study found that gold nanoparticles not only improve the distribution of cisplatin, targeting it to the site of tumors, but also reduce the renal toxicity induced by cisplatin, which are the primary concerns in cancer therapy.

Biocompatibility and Cytotoxicity of Gold Nanoparticles: Recent Advances in Methodologies and Regulations

Malgorzata Kus-Liskiewicz et al.

Summary: This review discusses the potential applications of metal nanoparticles, particularly gold nanoparticles, in various fields, and how their characteristics can affect biological activity. It introduces methods for evaluating cytotoxicity and biocompatibility, and addresses the impact of the lack of reliable, universal safety regulations on the development of these applications.
