Electrolyte recovery from spent Lithium-Ion batteries using a low temperature thermal treatment process

Nils Zachmann et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of temperature and process time on electrolyte recovery through low temperature thermal treatment. The results demonstrate successful recovery of electrolyte solvents and decomposition products at 130 degrees Celsius for 80 minutes. Thermal treatment below 150 degrees Celsius is a promising approach for electrolyte recovery prior to metal recycling.

Complex gas formation during combined mechanical and thermal treatments of spent lithium-ion-battery cells

Xianfeng Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the gas species generated during the mechanical and thermal treatments of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIB). Higher process temperatures lead to increased concentration or volume of the formed gases. The gas species generated slightly differ depending on the cell type at lower temperatures, but become analogous at higher temperatures. The formation of these gas species involves electrolyte volatilization, electrolyte degradation/decomposition, and pyrolysis of the organic separator and binder.

Summary: In the future, the recycling of electric vehicles will face challenges due to the presence of organic components. Thermal pre-treatment and hydrometallurgical processing will be combined for recycling. This study investigated the effects of applied parameters on subsequent metal recovery and determined the leachability of valuable metals. The results showed that pyrolysis at 700 degrees C for 30 minutes was the optimal treatment, achieving full recovery of Li, Mn, Co, and Ni in a short time.

PFAS use in electronic products and exposure risks during handling and processing of e-waste: A review

Berrin Tansel

Summary: This review provides an overview of the use of poly- and perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in electronic products, trends in ewaste generation, PFAS exposure pathways during e-waste handling and processing, and the presence of PFAS in environmental and human samples collected near e-waste processing sites. The manufacturing processes of electronic components make recycling or materials recovery very difficult. Exposure to PFAS can occur through inhalation, ingestion, and dermal routes. However, it is challenging to directly associate adverse health effects from e-waste exposure with PFAS, as there are other contributing factors. Better monitoring and epidemiological studies are needed to assess the potential health risks of PFAS exposure at e-waste handling sites.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance Toxicity and Human Health Review: Current State of Knowledge and Strategies for Informing Future Research

Suzanne E. Fenton et al.

Summary: Reports on the impacts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on the environment and human health have increased substantially in peer-reviewed literature. Epidemiological studies have shown associations between exposure to specific PFAS and various health effects, and further research is needed to understand differences in responses between sexes, species, and life stages. More contemporary approaches such as read-across, molecular dynamics, and protein modeling are proposed to accelerate the development of toxicity information on PFAS, as well as the need for precaution to protect human health given the known effects of certain PFAS compounds.

Comparison of the effects of incineration, vacuum pyrolysis and dynamic pyrolysis on the composition of NMC-lithium battery cathode-material production scraps and separation of the current collector

Gabriele Lombardo et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for lithium batteries poses a challenge for battery producers in handling production scrap and recycling cathode materials. Different thermal treatments such as incineration, dynamic pyrolysis, and pyrolysis under vacuum have varying effects on the microstructure and composition of scrap cathode material. The study found that under pyrolysis conditions, organic components in the cathodes triggered carbothermic reduction of active material, resulting in the formation of new compounds. The most effective technique for recovering cathode material is incineration at a temperature above 550 degrees C but below 650 degrees C for at least 90 minutes, yielding over 95% of recovered active material.
