Low-divergence femtosecond X-ray pulses from a passive plasma lens

Jonas Bjorklund Svensson et al.

Summary: X-ray pulses with low divergences are produced in a laser-wakefield accelerator by focusing electron bunches in a dense passive plasma lens. This plasma lens radiation reduces the divergence angle significantly compared to conventional betatron emission, while maintaining a similar number of emitted photons per electron. The proposed scheme offers the potential to generate brilliant and collimated few-femtosecond X-ray pulses for ultra-fast science research, particularly in X-ray diffraction and absorption spectroscopy-based studies.

Free-electron lasing at 27 nanometres based on a laser wakefield accelerator

Wentao Wang et al.

Summary: X-ray free-electron lasers are essential tools in structural biology and chemistry, generating intense radiation at sub-angstrom wavelengths. While laser wakefield accelerators are seen as a promising option for driving compact X-ray free-electron lasers, challenges remain due to the relatively poor quality of electron beams. The experimental demonstration of undulator radiation amplification using electron beams from a laser wakefield accelerator shows potential for developing compact X-ray free-electron lasers with a wide range of applications.

Radial density profile and stability of capillary discharge plasma waveguides of lengths up to 40 cm

M. Turner et al.

Summary: The study measured the parameter reproducibility and radial electron density profile of capillary discharge waveguides and found their focusing strength and plasma electron density to be stable and reproducible, with negligible effects on laser-driven plasma wakefield acceleration electron bunch variations. The radial channel profile rises faster than parabolic, with non-parabolic contributions affecting pulse propagation in certain configurations.

Optical control of transverse motion of ionization injected electrons in a laser plasma accelerator

Jie Feng et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates an all-optical method to control the transverse motion of an ionization-injected electron beam in a laser plasma accelerator by using transversely asymmetrical plasma wakefield. Experimental results show changing the laser focus shape alters the electron beam profiles and their accelerated trajectories. This method could be useful for convenient control of the electron beam's transverse motion, leading to synchrotron radiation from orbit angular momentum.
