Degradation of low-density polyethylene to nanoplastic particles by accelerated weathering

Teresa Menzel et al.

Summary: In this study, the abiotic degradation of commonly used low-density polyethylene (LDPE) was investigated. The research found that LDPE degradation occurs in three stages, starting from abrasion, followed by surface blocking, and finally the formation of secondary particles with high crystallinity. These particles, composed of highly polar oligomers, agglomerate during the final stage. The findings provide an explanation for the absence of free nanoplastic particles in natural samples.

Comparative effects of crystalline, poorly crystalline and freshly formed iron oxides on the colloidal properties of polystyrene microplastics

Trang T. T. Vu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the colloidal properties of microplastics under the influence of different types of iron oxides. The results show that the effects of iron oxides on microplastic aggregation vary, and this variation is dependent on the pH of the environment. Heteroaggregation, resulting from decreased electrostatic interactions, is found to be the major mechanism governing the colloidal dynamics.

Effects of exposure of polyethylene microplastics to air, water and soil on their adsorption behaviors for copper and tetracycline

Yuan Wang et al.

Summary: The adsorption behaviors of Cu(II) and tetracycline (TC) on polyethylene microplastics exposed to different environments varied, with marine- and soil-exposed microplastics showing higher adsorption and stabilization capacities. The adsorption isotherms were better described by Langmuir model for water- and soil-exposed microplastics, while kinetic experiments revealed differing intra-particle diffusion effects. Additionally, the glycosyl composition and density functional theory analysis suggested that biofilm components and metal-antibiotic complexes played a role in the adsorption process.

Non-invasive detection and localization of microplastic particles in a sandy sediment by complementary neutron and X-ray tomography

Christian Toetzke et al.

Summary: Microplastics have become a widespread pollutant in marine, terrestrial, and freshwater systems, impacting aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Traditional methods for analyzing microplastic abundance in soil or sediments involve destructive sampling, leading to loss of local distribution information. A new bimodal 3D imaging approach has been developed in this study to non-destructively detect microplastics in soil or sediment cores, providing detailed information on their size, shape, and surroundings. This approach can help identify microplastic particles with diameters of around 1 mm and characterize their shape and depositional background, offering insights into distribution, deposition, deterioration, and translocation processes in environmental samples.

Relevance of Iron Oxyhydroxide and Pore Water Chemistry on the Mobility of Nanoplastic Particles in Water-Saturated Porous Media Environments

Taotao Lu et al.

Summary: The increasing presence of nano- and microplastic in aqueous environments due to plastic disposal has raised a need to investigate the transport and retention mechanisms of nanoplastic particles in water-saturated porous media. This study used column experiments to reveal that water chemistry and soil components strongly affect the deposition and fate of nanoplastic particles in subsurface environments.
