On reliability of inferring liquefied shear strengths from simple shear testing

Riccardo Fanni et al.

Summary: A laboratory study compared the behavior of loose tailings under simple shear loading using two different devices. The results showed that the shear strength measured by the DSS apparatus was significantly higher than that measured by the TSHC apparatus at high strains. The comparison analysis indicated that the DSS may overestimate shear strength at high strains for loose specimens.

Effect of Tamping Conditions on the Shear Strength of Tailings

David Reid et al.

Summary: Moist tamping is a commonly used sample preparation technique in tailings research, which produces loose and contractive specimens. This study found that compacting a specimen to a dense initial state can significantly increase the peak undrained shear strength. The researchers emphasize the importance of caution during sample preparation to avoid unrealistic peak strengths.

Results of a critical state line testing round robin programme

David Reid et al.

Summary: A critical state testing round robin programme was conducted on sandy silt gold tailings by 15 laboratories globally. The study found that laboratories using EOTSF to measure void ratio showed the best reproducibility, while most other test procedure variations had little effect on the results. The elevation range of CSL was observed to be 0.04 void ratio for laboratories using EOTSF.
