Choosing Bad versus Worse: Predictions of Two-Photon-Absorption Strengths Based on Popular Density Functional Approximations

Marta Choluj et al.

Summary: We conducted a benchmark study on the performance of density functional approximation (DFA) in predicting two-photon-absorption (2PA) strengths in pi-conjugated molecules. Our results show that global hybrid functionals are best suited to reproduce the absolute values of 2PA strengths of donor-acceptor molecules. Range-separated functionals CAM-B3LYP and optimally tuned LC-BLYP, however, show the highest linear correlations with the reference RI-CC2 results. Hence, we recommend the latter DFAs for structure-property studies across large series of dipolar compounds.

Tomas Nevesely et al.

Summary: Geometrical E → Z alkene isomerization, a critical topic in organic photochemistry, has seen significant advancements in recent years. By utilizing energy transfer catalysis, directed isomerization of alkenes can be achieved. This review summarizes the progress in the field of geometric alkene isomerization enabled by energy transfer catalysis from 2000 to 2020, and discusses the reaction mechanisms, induction models, and applications in total synthesis and regioselective reactions.

Photocatalytic Isomerization of (E)-Anethole to (Z)-Anethole

Marvin Korff et al.

Summary: In this study, natural product (E)-anethole was successfully isomerized to (Z)-anethole using a self-designed cheap photoreactor. The selection of an appropriate photosensitizer, Ir(p-tBu-ppy)(3), was supported by theoretical predictions of the triplet energies of (E)- and (Z)-anethole. The reaction achieved high conversion with a catalyst loading of only 0.1 mol% and mild irradiation conditions. Diastereomerically pure diols with different configurations were obtained through dihydroxylation.

SERS monitoring of photoinduced-enhanced oxidative stress amplifier on Au@carbon dots for tumor catalytic therapy

Linjia Li et al.

Summary: Au@carbon dots nanohybrids with core-shell structure are synthesized to monitor NIR-photoinduced peroxidase-like catalytic processes in tumor, which improves the therapeutic effect. The nanohybrids deplete glutathione and amplify intratumor oxidative stress based on NIR-photoinduced enhanced peroxidase and glutathione oxidase-like activities, leading to excellent and fast PDT therapeutic effect. In addition, the reactive oxygen species activity in the tumor microenvironment is counteracted and eliminated by the presence of glutathione.

Simultaneously enhancing aggregation-induced emission and boosting two-photon absorption of perylene diimides through regioisomerization

Liang Xu et al.

Summary: This study designed and synthesized two compounds with different aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and two-photon absorption (2PA) properties. The compound with ortho-substituted showed enhanced and accelerated AIE performance and improved 2PA properties. By combining accelerated AIE and enhanced 2PA, the performance of the molecules in various fields was improved.

Taking phototherapeutics from concept to clinical launch

Brianna M. Vickerman et al.

Summary: More than four decades have passed since the first example of a light-activated (caged) compound was described. In recent years, there have been advancements in phototherapeutics that are photoresponsive in the optical window of tissue (600-900 nm), offering new clinical opportunities for precision dosing and targeted drug delivery. This Review discusses the current scope and limitations, path to the clinic, and therapeutic applications of long-wavelength-responsive, light-activated drugs.

Discovery of and insights into one-photon and two-photon excited ACQ-to-AIE conversion via positional isomerization

Xueting Long et al.

Summary: In this study, two positional isomers with different aggregation behaviors were designed and synthesized by changing the substituted position of perylenetetracarboxylic diimide and benzanthrone moieties. The meta-substituted product exhibited aggregation-caused quenching, while the ortho-substituted product showed aggregation-induced emission. The fluorescence enhancement effect for the ortho-substituted product was attributed to the restriction of intramolecular rotation and the excellent two-photon absorption performance.

Near-infrared dyes for two-photon absorption in the short-wavelength infrared: strategies towards optical power limiting

Simon Pascal et al.

Summary: This work provides an overview of recent advances in two-photon absorbing chromophores active in the short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectral range, describing common strategies and structure-property relationships leading to near-infrared (NIR) electronic absorption of chromophores. A complete review of molecules featuring two-photon absorption (2PA) beyond 1100 nm is presented for potential use in optical power limiting applications. Recent progress in optical power limiting in the SWIR band is reported, emphasizing the use of the two-photon induced excited state absorption (ESA) process as an enhancer.
